Greatlance is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

This lance features a long pole, and was originally intended to be used by knights for jousting.

This weapon is primarily used in charging attacks, and would require tremendous strength and dexterity to be handled by a mere foot soldier.

Skill: Charge
Hold lance at waist and charge at foe. Use strong attack while charging to extend the length of the charge.

Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused and Buffed.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • It and all other pike-class weapons have a slow attack speed when used one handed that becomes much faster when wielded with two hands.
  • The Greatlance was considered a very poor weapon upon launch, for it had a very slow moveset (this was worsened in one of the game's patches) and lacked poise on its attacks. However, multiple game patches have improved the slow moveset, the lack of poise and the Pike class overall. This makes it a considerably better weapon than it was before.

Location/Where to Find

  • Found in Lothric Castle near the Dragon Barracks bonfire. From the bonfire, head up the stairs and to the left to find the Greatlance next to a red-eyed Lothric Knight.

I guess someone rushed Greatlance when he had to get on the plane to Elden ring, cus he left a lot of his cool **** back in his apartment.

      • Anonymous

For those who don't know- offhand greatlance can combo into almost any move in the game that isn't explicitly slow. If I remember right, the slowest it has is L2 to Ultra Greatsword overhead R2. Not as good as Halberd or Estoc, but the better confirms are spicy and you can 2hand it for a somewhat decent moveset.

        • Anonymous

Step 1) get enemy to 30 HP
Step 2) wait for them to pull out parry wep
Step 3) full charge 2H Heavy
Step 4) watch them try to parry it
          Step 5) Laugh

this sucks do not upgrade this weapon this is so slow u can not even use it without a shield it also sucks with a shield becuz enemy would run away before u even hit him to slow

            • Anonymous

I just can't get this **** to work for me. I can get behind many things - slow moveset, low poise, lack of attack variety... But this godawful tracking on R1s just kills me. I can freeaim, sure, but it's very hard to do with a spear-type weapon.

              • Anonymous

I fought this one guy and we both lagged horribly but by some miracle I lived though the lag, I almost killed him afterwards but he had tears of denial on and began to quick step spam and after about 10 seconds of driving into him I managed to prevent myself from being backstabed and finally killed him

Why do so many trash fat Casul scrub use this garbage? Lose this shiite and pick up a pkcs, best weapon gaming history. I destroy and point down cryhard greatlance scrubs so often. You will get rekked so many time without pkcs. Git gud because "gud" is japanese for pkcs.

every time I start a playthrough I plan to make x build, use x weapon, then I get the Grealance and before I know it it's +10 and my main weapon

                    • I had one person the other day who literally just stood there and whiffed three tries while I was allowed to charge up each time. He clapped after that, and then we got back to actually fighting, but he was too injured to have won. Genuinely hope they learned something from that, and hope they whip some ass later on down the line.

For anyone wondering why your R1 + WA doesn't knock people down, you have to do the strong attack to keep the charge going like it says in the WA. That'll knock them down, and you can full charge an R2 to catch them on the wake-up.

Also, this weapon is great for a Cr1tikal (Penguinz0) YouTuber cosplay. I'd imagine he'd be proud to have a giant thrusting stick lol

                      • Anonymous

2 hand r2 can be parried people.. just the hit box is wonky asf... Died multiple times to it before realizing the tip has to basically be in you, pun intended, as you parry... Add in currently latency atm and most people just don't bother parrying...

                        • Anonymous

fun facts about this weapon :
fully charged R2 can't be parried
poise frames on R2 kick in really fast
2HR1 combo's into weapon art for a 800-900 damage combo
R2 has really good tracking and is good to use after a backstab or ripost
the running attack is useful when punishing estus chuggers
running attack will start as soon as you push R1
running R1 locks you in one direction and can sometimes be a disadvantage
R1 can combo into R1 with shield up
has one of the longest ranges in the game
R1 can be parried on reaction so be careful
leo ring will only work if you use non elemental infusions
                          best infused with heavy
if used off hand, you can combo with straight swords, katanas, rapiers, greatswords and another pike
very good on sl 60-85 build
sometimes a bad thing to use on ganks since it's a thrust weapon and will usually only hit one person

                          • Anonymous

So a weird thing about this weapon, is that when you perform a jumping attack when two handed it plays the same sound cue like when you miss a backstab, to my knowledge this is the only weapon with this odd quirk but im too lazy to test it with all the weapons.

                            • Anonymous

I would be really cool if when you infuse it it gets this wooden cloak (i dont now how i should call this ) like if make it flammy it gets red wood , when sharp a metal cloak and when poision infusin a purple cloak .

if you saw sucker with this and a greatshield. ready your mini shield/katana you gonna have to parry this sucker

I miss the entire Lance class from DS2... So many cool weapons are lost in DS3. Heide Greatlance for lyfe!

                                  • Anonymous

this weapon is underrated as *****, but actually it rocks in PvP since you can just spam its R2 and it will probably not be parried and also will stunlock them to death and can't be effectively blocked by any shield, specially if infused with magic damage hahahahaha

                                    • Anonymous

Very underrated weapon Light combos into weapon art Full 2 hand heavy cant be parried Left hand rapier recomended for rushing and quickstep players

Greatlance in right hand, lothric war banner in left, in herald set. War banner weapon art and charge with the lance and have fun playing heavy cavalry charge and watch the fat kids fly.

Since when did this*****tty long stick get the attention of so many dumbass trash casuls? More and more noobs are spamming this garbage in pvp and it's annoying

This weapons one-handed r1 makes you step forward further than other weapons in it s class and staggers almost like a hammer. Offhand dragonslayer s greataxe or yhorm s machete and rumble some health bars

I've seen some players swear by this weapon. What's the deal with it? Is there a secret way to use it, because in my experience I've been about 40/60 in pvp on a qual build, and the few wins have been from out-ranging, which any polearm can do

                                              • Anonymous

I feel like this weapon could be an absolute monster with Carthus Rouge or a blood infusion. You could follow up the L2 with a Blood Corvian Dagger or Crow Talons.

                                                • Anonymous

I cant link it (dont know how), but there is an amazing guide to this on reddit. This weapon is really underrated as it is, just go check it out. One more thing to add to that guide though, you can dead angle this. If you unlock and turn in a circle and r1, it does a sweep, kinda inconsistent though.

                                                  • Anonymous

Anyone know if blessed could be better than heavy on a str/fth build? I doubt it, but curious if anyone has ever tried

This big pokey boi's fully-charged two-handed R2s cannot be parried. Free Leo counter damage in PvP on those not in the know.

Heavy or Refined? I'm doing a Maldron cosplay and need to know the highest AR possible with staying below level 200.

Don't really care for PvP but this thing can rack up some damage in PvE plus it has some great range. Can do about 300 dmg per poke on the winged knights just before Lorian.

                                                          • Anonymous

This thing's R1-L2-R2 ls a true combo that does 800-900 dmg on a 50 STR build with Human pine resin and Leo ring. Absolutely beautiful. HONK HONK THE PAIN TRAIN HATH COMETH

Might be because I'm bad at PvP, might be because I'm unlucky, might be both, but the Greatlance is just not that great of a weapon.

                                                              The Greatlance:
                                                              is slow;
                                                              has weak HA, leaving it unable to trade with most, if not all HA weapons (non-HA weapons are fine);
                                                              running attacks as well as backstep attacks use up a lot of stamina;
                                                              running attacks have bad tracking;
                                                              is easy to parry (can be circumvented by playing unpredictably);
despite being a Pike, can still lose space-trades (probably me messing up)(should note that the Greatlance isn't the longest Pike).

The one nice thing about the Greatlance though is that it has a 2H R1>L2>R2 true combo.

i dont think this weapon is good in pvp by any means. worst weapon i tried so far and i experimented with different build types and i really wanted to like it.

                                                                • Anonymous

Okay so my friend was using this and he back stabbed me with and without a hornet ring and riposted with and without a hornet ring. Both times the non hornet crit did more. I would like ot know if anyone else can replicate this cause it makes 0 sense.

                                                                  • Anonymous

This is the only pike that can combo into a second hit when left handed. It can also combo into the heavy attacks of fast weapons like straight swords and curved swords.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Anyone feel that this weapons hitbox is small? Even for a thrust attack it seems for you to be very accurate on hitting your targets

                                                                      • Anonymous

Like its real weapon counterpart in real life, it should be used with heavy armor (albeit in real life the armored knight in tournament armor was on horseback). I suggest to use it with heavy armor like Lapp's armor set, and Lapp's armor set is tournament armor, so it fits. I mean, I use it the greatlance with Lapp's armor and I've been beating people with it easily. Also, play patiently with the weapon. Let the opponent attack first then attack. That or play tricks with them. Make them lose patience and then attack. This weapon is quite good for players who likes to use patience to their advantage.

                                                                        • Anonymous

why is nobody talking about buffs if the damage is so mediocre? DMB? Crystal weapon? Suddenly not existing anymore when using the great lance? Wouldn't a hybrid build not be the natural answer to push the damage?

                                                                          • Anonymous

I don't think a lot of its attacks are even parriable, I've found that when I do charged r2s they are unable to parry them along with the normal r1s

                                                                            • Anonymous

You need to have REALLY high poise if you want to trade using this weapon's R1s, but the WA can actually hyperarmor through almost everything if you wear the right gear. After the patch imo it's viable on tanky quality/strenght builds: definitely not the strongest weapon, but with the leo ring on you will murder people after some practice :D

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                disgusting.

should have at least 21 like greatswords as its slower than them too

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  **Tested with poise of 28.91**
In testing the hyper-armor of this weapon I have found some interesting results. The frames of hyper-armor seem to start during the attack animation instead of the last few frames of windup. Where hyper starts relatively fast on "great" weapons, the greatlance's hyper is lacking in terms of relativity (only about 4-5 frames or so, maybe). When testing on enemies in NG+, even more striking results were found. When tested on enemies that had daggers, straight swords, hand sickles, spears, and great-hammers, the greatlance could only hyper through weapons of straight sword size and less, with the strange exceptions of Lothric Knight swordsmen where it cannot and Lothric Knight spearmen where it could.
In conclusion, the hyper-armor is lacking in comparison to the "great" classes and seems to be extremely weak when, once again, compared to "great" classes. Do I think it is a good idea? Yes, the weapon needed love and having the new heavy infusion scaling really helps. Do I think it is good enough? Unfortunately, no; if the weapon had hyper-frames similar to those of "great" weapons where the frames start about half way during the animation, I think that the weapon would be used even more. I understand that with the Leo Ring this weapon can hit for absurdly high damage, but I just don't think the hyper frames in its current state are good enough. If it could tank large weapon hits, like the "great" weapons can, I can say that the weapon is great; however in its current state the greatlance is only O.K.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

The hyper armor implemented in the 1.11 patch appears to be applied on the actual 2-handed attack animation. The hyper armor will not be applied on the wind up, only the animation where the character starts to lunge forwards.

I'm not sure, but I believe the hyper armor may be applied sooner with uncharged heavy attacks.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • There's an overwhelmingly large amount of bad mouthing this weapon (it mostly deserves it, to be honest.) However!! I find it QUITE amusing to be hacking at someone with a battle axe, only to dodge backward into some bow shots. Do this a few times, anybody with half a brain will recognize the pattern. Then, when they try to close the distance, swap to this really quickly and catch em of guard with r1, r1, weapon art + extension. How the curved sword trash will fall before you!

                                                                                          • Anonymous

It's sad how this is the only lance in dark souls 3 as in two it was quite powerful even in pvp but here there is just one and it is terrible compared to ds3 and isn't even worth getting the strength and dex to use it. Over all it is practically poise in weapon form, useless

                                                                                            • Anonymous

It seems like most people here don't seem to understand that the R1 combos into the full weapon art, which deals massive damage. It's not the best, but it's certainly not bad, you just have to be cautious.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

The lance is certainly bad, there's no doubt about that, and using it in PvP is a recipe for disaster. But it's also an absolute blast to use in PvE, and if you like challenging yourself unnecessarily, fighting bosses with this thing is incredibly fun. And it's stylish as *****, too. It's worth noting that while the R1s and R2s are horribly slow, as has been pointing out, the running, rolling, and shield-poke attacks, as well as the weapon art, appear to have the standard speed shared by all spears and pikes - that is to say, MUCH faster than its regular moveset, which is a useful thing as the greatlance boasts the highest AR of its class. You'll want to rely on those unless you're prepared to be VERY patient and careful with your spacing.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

So i'm trying to make this build right so i'm trying to figure out if I should use this or the Lothric Long Spear. Do they have the same attack speed I can't really tell but I might just be stupid?

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Okay, so the game pretty much implies that quality build is the way to go with this thing (read the description: "requires tremendous strength and dexterity to be handled") and refined infusion is the best choice. However: i wonder if you can pull something else off with it. Like crystal or lighting infusions combined with buffs yadi yada......Oh wait... I just realized: other damage types don't deal counter damage so Leo Ring will be useless.Yeah, i guess refined infusion is the only choice, period. And the build must be at least 35/35.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

So i was fidgeting around Rosaria as i was trying to come up with my next build... When i returned back to my little guilty pleasure - the greatlance. As for a moment i thought "why not make the build around this thing again" i quickly remembered all the painful memories of being f*cked in the ass because attack speed sucks and shield-poking is the way to go if you want to hit the target before target hits you.But the build required for me to have very little vitality, so my weight ratio was on-edge to 70% (on calculator). So i needed something (theoretically) to use off-hand so i could use the poking. That's when i was like "why not the torch"... So i did just that. I took off-hand torch and checked how the poking works. And uhm... Attack speed there is insane. The poking with the Torch up is FASTER than with any shield. I checked. All the shields (small, medium, great) have the same animation for the poke-attack with the same attack speed, but with the torch it's like 20-30% faster. The animation is faster and so is the attack speed overall. I'M NOT JOKING. This is a thing!I'm pretty sure that's a bug because that's the speed of shield-poking with rapiers, but if that's a feature... Torch meta incoming?

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Paired with the Leo ring, a little practice, and good spacing a timing, this can one shot week players with one r1, take more than half of tougher ones. It's got counter damage through the roof and I love it. Things the onriki and ubadachis wa are very easily knocked down by this and it's devastating. Don't discount it do to it not being a strait or curved sword. It's got it's own nook.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

As the same person who commented "Needs Serious Fixing," I feel obligated to report my discoveries with this weapon after such a long time. After cosplaying as Mauldron the Assassin for two cycles of the game I have found two things that are important:1. This weapon MUST be paired with the Leo Ring at all times for it to really shine (going to explain why in a bit), and2. The weapon is extremely defensive and thus should rotate around a defensive buildUsing a greatshield is an excellent idea because the shield poke will be your fastest attack and is not too shabby with the damage which also gets boosted by thrust counter damage. Complimenting the defensive style, you also want to wear heavier armor and bump up vigor and vitality as you can trade hits more often with higher health and more defense. Rings that also boost defense and give more health are recommended and Havel's Ring +1 and above is required for the armor. Finally the Leo Ring boosts the counter thrust damage of the weapon impressively, BUT it seems to activate whenever it wants to. I don't exactly know why but there seems to be two thresholds for counter damage: the first is when an opponent is in an animation before hitting you, and the second is a successful, frame perfect trade. The second scenario is when the Greatlance beats every other weapon in the game by enabling you to rack up damage of numbers near 800-900 on one R1 alone. Combined with a possibility that this weapon might be able to follow up its R1 with a weapon art and you have a weapon that can be really dangerous... on trades. In summary, very good while trading with people and npcs, bad in its slow speed and extremely defensive, "play perfect" style.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous
