Wretch is an Enemy in Dark Souls 3
Wretch Enemy Description
- Appears to be a large, sickly pale amalgamation of different creatures.
- Features a large, gaunt, quadrupedal body with a humanoid head, webbed digits, and undeveloped wings.
Combat Information
- Uses Elemental Attacks (Magic) and can deal heavy Durability damage to your equipment.
- They’re easy to kill when alone. Wretches don’t move quickly, so it’s wise to rush them, attack, and score a fast kill before they can do anything.
- Against groups, rush in and kill one Wretch. Then, back off, get Stamina, and fight whichever Wretch is the most aggressive about reaching you.
- Can be Rapported?
Wretch Location
Appears in the Irithyll Dungeon.
Wretch Notes & Trivia
- The first one you encounter seems to be a non-hostile prisoner, gripping a wall.

These sometimes do not attack you and just lurk in the darkness. Actually made me yelp the first time I saw one hugging the wall.

Surround sound headphones are NOT recommended here... At least not while pillaging remains. Thank Velka we have volume control on the headsets now✌

I feel bad for these dudes. If their creator was as skilled as Seath, they'd look like Priscilla from DS1 or just be a sick dragon. Or maybe Seath got results because he just ****ed a human. Ds lores odd.

So.. is this some kind of experiment or trying to turn men to dragons? Or a failed test of the dragon stones.. since you find the place to make it to dragonpeak and the torso stone right in this area makes sense to me.

These things make my skin crawl like oh my god i hate being near them theyre horrible i hate going through the dungeons in every run just because of that one in the cell on the wall ugh.
- Anonymous
I kill all of these things, out of pity. There is no way these things enjoy being alive.
- Anonymous
I wasn't paying attention when exploring the dungeon because, Jailers kept draining my health and I went into a cell that has the most terrifying thing I have seen.
- Anonymous
So I’ve killed over 70 of these and only got 2 short swords... didn’t realize the rates were so bad lol

So according to this page the dagger wielding wretch drops the spear as well as the dagger but you dont know what the spear wielding wretch drops? That makes no f ucking sense
Miyazaki trickery, the non hostile one made me think they're just harmless prisoners, so I walked right into the cell of a second one only to be grabbed and killed..

The first non hostile one of these c*nts made me jump, since i opened the gate before i even noticed it, and then it was just there on the wall, staring at me
Got a Pale Pine Resin from a naked one. Also the "Staff Wretches" should be updated, they are clearly the ones that wield the spears, there is no staff wielding Wretch. Which means they should be renamed and the Tailbone Spear should be added to their drop table and testing should be done to see if the Dagger Wretches can drop the Spear to see whether it should be removed from their drop table or not. I know this won't be fixed unless I do it myself but oh well.

THAT IS NOT A STAFF WRETCH.... ITS A SPEAR WRETCH.... GET IT RIGHT!

I like to imagine these as the long-imprisoned shells of the filthy guide-readers that used the Drake sword for the first half of their play through in DS1

Am I the only one interested in how the amalgamations of irithyll came to be?

I did not expect something this nightmare giving to be in dark souls
- Anonymous
I hate them... I hate this area were you first encounter them... I didn't want a horror game

I'm sure these guys are crossbreeds of humans and dragons. Their body looks just like Oceiros', and can be inferred because of Oceiros that the royal family tried crossing humans with dragons to create the perfect heir (which could explain Lothric's deformity). The wretches are failed experiments locked away, like Priscilla was.

I just wanna hug the first one you see, despite how horrifying it looks, I know it just wants to be loved.

Can anyone confirm if they actually drop titanite scales?
I've killed about 50 of them by now with 361 item discovery and haven't gotten a single one.
No other wiki or source can confirm that either.

Huh... so thats what they are called...
Nope, they forever will be "Baby Face" whenever I fight them.

What's the lore behind those? Did they got experimented on, are they some freak accident or are they a result of the pontif eyes corruption, probably like the Sullyvahn Beasts or those dogs with human heads?

The screaming one in the dungeon is so annoying, it makes me wish for the DS2 mechanic where monsters would stop spawning

When I first entered Irithyll Dungeon, I already felt creepy. Then, when I fell down and everything went wrong, I just wanted to run from Jailers because I just noticed my HP go nonexistent. And then I accidentally ran into a cell with this guy crawling up the wall, his babyface right into the camera, and Jailers running right after me with their chuckles... I swear to god, I've probably never ever been so scared in a Souls game.

Ok, been farming the Three at the base of the dungeon for hours to get their dagger. Not a single drop, not even Pine resine.

In case anyone was wondering, I think I figured out what these things are. They look very similar to statues found in the Cathedral of the Deep, especially their face. Some of these statues have wings, but others have small nubs hidden beneath a robe, which looks identical to the Wretch's wings. The Wretches use sorcery and are related to dragons, and the Pilgrims of the Cathedral also use sorcery and supposedly turn into the Pilgrim Butterflies above Lothric Castle (also called Undead Dragons in some guides.)There's a lot of connections but I don't know what they mean. I think these guys were clerics of the Way of White who became failed dragonkin experiments and tossed into the dungeons when Aldrich/Sulyvahn had no more use for them. Perhaps they were a part of Oceiros's attempt at making the perfect heir, or perhaps it was their attempt at escaping the Deep that consumed the other clerics. Not sure, but I'm convinced they're related.

Since finding the screaming wretch, I always kill it, every playthrough, no matter how fast I'm trying to get through the area. The noise is so irritating while wearing headphones that I feel obligated to silence it.

They are actually fail attempts at creating a man-dragon hybrid (dragon torso stone) that have been locked in the Irithyll dungeon. This is referenced in the tailbone spear description.
When I accidentally ended up in a room full of these ungodly things, it was like a horror movie. Everywhere I turned, there was one. I was so freaked out, I had trouble finding the exit lol.
