If you just watch these guys from a distance, they just shamble about and smash grave markers. They keep busy, it's very respectable.

These brave men are doing God's work. I feel bad that the only technology they have available are tree branches. Maybe the bloodborne hunter could show these guys a thing or two.

They also drop titanite shards. Just happened to me, not sure if the chance is just super low.

They have a horizontal swing that actually has a degree of hyper armor, so on higher NG levels where their damage is actually threatening, that's something to watch out for.

Trick I use vs these guys - Pyromancy flamethrower. Just need to spray them with a little flame and they stagger. Once staggered, just take them out with regular weapons.
So before the invention of gun powders Hunters use giant toothpicks to hunt beasts.

Why do these guys attack the player? They're hunting Lycanthropes, not Unkindled.

I was really REALLY hoping that, in addition to pikes, they would drop a "tree" item. It didn't have to be a weapon or do anything, I just thought it would the best thing ever to get a tree. XD

There are several ways to kill them without getting rekt.If you have a spear or a lance you can jab them from afar without dying.Their jab animation is super long so you can walk behind them to do a backstab or simply hit 'em from behind.Or you can b8 them one by one my simply walking near one and luring them, since attacking unleashes the horde.

Hit them with a fire imbued weapons or a torch, pyromancy also, and they stagger in the most amusing way.
