Mad King's Folly | ![]() |
-(-/17) |
Crucifix of the Mad King is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3. It was added with The Ringed City DLC.
A cross spear hung with a malformed corpse.
Once, a mad king was born to the pygmy royalty and Shira, knight of Filianore, put him to rest. But Shira's cross spear, unable to kill the undying king, only pinned itself to him. Shira delivered them together to the darkroom, where she stayed and held them close.
Skill: Mad King's Folly
Slam malformed corpse into the ground to briefly awaken it, then fillet with strong attack to trigger a roar, a blessing, or vexation.
Notes and Tips:
- Upgrade Material: Twinkling Titanite.
- Infusable: No
- Buffable: Yes
- Despite it's innate dark damage, Dark Blade does work on this weapon, increasing its damage even further.
- Both physical and dark damage scale with Faith.
- It has the Great Club R2. Convenient for groups of enemies or catching rolls.
- When the weapon art is performed, it will randomly trigger one of three effects:
-Roar is an AoE blast that covers your front and sides.
-Blessing works similarly to Perseverance.
-Vexation spawns a following floating sphere, which explodes dealing Dark damage to you and all enemies (it can be dodged). - Shira never triggers the vexation effect when she's using this weapon.
Location/Where to Find
- Drops from Shira when you face her in the final area of The Ringed City DLC.

cool design and fun weapon … but TERRIBLE against midir hahah
- Anonymous
This is definitely the coolest weapon in DS3. The only other weapons I can think of in the entire series that can compete with this thing are the Ivory King Greatsword and Dragon King Greataxe
- Anonymous
Just noticed that this is just a Crescent Axe with the mad king's remains on it.

One of my favorite weapons. Badass name, design, decent damage and a very unique weapon art. I love it.
- Anonymous
I realized something i thought is quite interesting but I need someone who is familiar with the lore of the pygmys to help me. While using this weapon I spoted all those ram horns going through the skull and surrounding it. Those look like the same horns you see on the Ringed Knight armor and weapons. Is there some connection between the Pygmys and the first humans or am I overthinking this?

I swear this thing was supposed to be a Bloodborne trick weapon but it got rejected somehow.
- Anonymous
Anyone else try breaking it to see if it did the santiers spear thing. It really sounded similar when you compare descriptions. Kinda wish it did would have been cool.

I like to come here every so often just to laugh at all of the people crying about this thing, some people take ds3 pvp way too seriously and it shows in this comment section

Is it just me or does the weapon art sound a lot like cleric beast from that blood born game?
One of only half a dozen innate dark weapons in the game and only one of two which can actually be infused. And the other is the murky hand scythe which is terrible uninfused, meaning this is actually the best weapon to cast dark blade on.
- Anonymous
Hilariously trash. Please allow me to explain why before you downvote me.
People go on about the damage, but Heavy/Lightning Splitleaf Greatsword outperforms it on a Strength/Lightning build and is available much earlier. You lose the almighty Spin 2 Win that almost every other halberd has for a stupid, slow golf swing that gives your opponent a free forwards-roll into backstab in most situations.
Most egregious of all, an RNG WEAPON ART. Do I even need to explain how mind-blowingly terrible that is? There is 1/3 random chance when you throw this WA out that you will actually get what you needed in that moment. Why would you want to play a slot machine when Spin Sweep and Wind Wheel are actually consistently useful?
I'm convinced this is a joke weapon From place end game just for players who wanted something stupid and wacky to play around with.
- Anonymous
Very Very unique weapon. I like it a lot, although the WA is random, meaning you cannot 100% plan your next move, I still find it kinda fun. Although I could go without the dark explosion because for me it often does more harm than good. On my dark build if I get caught in the vexation it hits me for over 500hp wearing mid to heavy armor. It's still a lot of fun, but because of this I generally do not use it in co-op. Actually when I am facing someone using this weapon in a duel, if you have the force miracle, and time it right you can make it so they almost always get hit with the explosion. If they are wearing the blindfold mask and dark clutch ring this hits for near 700hp making it pretty dangerous. That said, still a really good weapon. Some call it OP, and I guess if you are really good with it I might be able to see that with the ideal set up, but in general i disagree with this. I never use this weapon in PvE but makes it very strong in PvP once you get the hang of it on a properly built character. I have never had as many draws in one v one duels as I have since I started using this, if your low on health you can sometimes use the vexation WA as a self destruct device like the Predator did to take everyone with you.

Is it just me or does this look like the roaring halberd from ds2?

Is it worth going all the way up to 60 faith? I'm currently at 40/40 str/fth

Oh look, another weapon wich's sole existance pits firelink gs into deeper shame.

I have 40str/fth on my crucifix build, is it worth going all the way to 60fth? I'm trying to stay on sl120

L2 has seemingly godlike poise, deals like 500 damage with dark blade and combos into itself. It consumes no FP if you don't follow up with the R2. It's fast, and will outtrade even an UGS with the right setup. I daresay, it's one of the best moves in the game as a whole.
They could've given us just that, and this weapon would be amazing. But they decided to go even further. They gave us a halberd with monstrous damage, the greatclub R2, and to top it all off, 3 different followups to one of the greatest moves in the game. Roar is good for combos, blessing is just a better perseverance and vexation has so many unique uses that it's actually worth going for sometimes.
To top it all off, they made it scale with faith and ALSO BE BUFFABLE WITH DARK BLADE.
With how rarely I see this monster be used, I'm very surprised. This weapon is ridiculously amazing.
- Anonymous
This thing reminds me of the Amydalan Arm from Bloodborne. Feels like the whole weapon is a reference, it even makes the same sound as a Cleric Beast.
- Anonymous
Holy Frick, this weapon can be buffed. Just used it for the first time. Isn't it quite rare for Twinkling Titanite weapons to be able to buff? Maybe my memory deceives me, but I can't name a weapon that's twinkling and buffable besides this one.
I really like this weapon so far, even more now that I'm able to buff it.
- Anonymous
should add that intelligence is not relevant for this weapon with an E scaling, and 10 base requirement
on top of this, dark weapon only uses faith as well
put the two together and u have a remarkably stat efficient source of DARK damage
- Anonymous
Absolute beast of an weapon. This and Bloodletter are my favorite weapons in the Soulsborne Series.
Although Kos Parasite is a close one too.
- Anonymous
Throw this weapon in the trash right now if you have it in your inventory and praise the pkcs the one true savior
- Anonymous
To the person that called this a “Bloodborne” weapon, you should play DS2
- Anonymous
My favorite weapon in the entire game, in fact the ringed city has some of my favorite weapons in the entire series! Can’t wait for OH
- Anonymous
If you look hard enough under this ugly ass Bloodborne stick, there's actually a decent looking halberd under there.
- Anonymous
Easily my favorite weapon in the game. The Crucifix is ridiculous.
Shame you get it so late...

Developers have confirmed that the roar is actually a colllection of the screams from the salty players who fell victim to this beast.

What the **** is a pygmy? I google it and only found pictures of African children, while the definition I've found say an ethnic group of people who is short. So the pygmies are just midgets? And the mad king is actually a mad midget kangz??
- Anonymous
What if the events of the Ringed City DLC come BEFORE killing Soul of Cinder, but take place in a far future (you travel forward in time) so the Mad King impaled in the halberd is YOU after becoming Lord of Hollows?
- Anonymous
>When the weapon art is performed, it will randomly trigger one of three effects
no it literally just summons a dark orb that deals massive damage to me and knocks me down while doing no damage to enemy
over a dozen attempts and never seen it do anything else
- Anonymous
You know, I've never seen MANY people using this weapon, but the ones I've come up against usually roflstomped me through sheer damage and hyper armor alone every time I tried to get a hit in - So today I decided to try using it myself at meta, 27 str for 2h soft cap, 60 fth for dark blade, optimized my absorption, and WOW.. it really is that easy lmao this thing is stupidly strong
- Anonymous
Don't bother using the weapon art, just trade hits with massive poise L2 slam and watch that damage.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
figures this is one of the pages that doesn't have the difference in the damage with the scaling. Is it better to invest in Faith for this, or Strength? Some people I've read say to max out the Faith, others have a mix of both, and some say to max out both if possible. I ran with 30/50 for the longest time and I'm unsure if that's a good spread. It never feels like it's enough damage.
- Anonymous
So.. I have this and 100% meet all the requirements to use, but the WA just makes the scream and costs no FP. No poise boost, bomb, etc. Do I have a broken 1?
- Anonymous
is this any good for high SL builds. Tried it at meta and it was really good in PvE and PvP. Now i'm SL300 and kinda wanna use something other than the lothric greatsword and sellswords :/

I wonder what happens if you break this weapon. Will the corpse be deattached and leave the crucifix clean?
- Anonymous
Imagine complaining about someone's preferred playstyle. You guys are the ones ruining the game.
- Anonymous
Can someone explain why this weapon is broken? I don’t see it being better then the other halberds at least. It has split ar at a standard level, it has two extra underwhelming moves that lack either range or speed and a weapon art that’s a free backstab if you dodge it. The only thing it has over other halberds is the extra hyperarmor, which is greatsword tier. It really needs it though, because it doesn’t have a tear off skin spin to win to win damage trades with bigger weapons. Please explain to me how this is broken, or explain why the whole glaive class is broken while you do it. Nothing about it is overpowered or broken to me at all. Just an interesting, but average halberd.

Can we just appreciate the amount of cruelty that is put into this weapon? Not only it was made out of living human being, not only it was created by hanging the poor guy on it until loss of sanity (hopefully) for ridiculous amount of time, not only it can deal insane amount of dark damage (potentially causing a lot of pain),not only it has the corpse as a main part of weapon, but you can also torture already complety hollowed but still "alive" (probably) former thinking being by repeatedly smashing his skull into ground making it scream in pain...
- Anonymous
This weapon boosts my win rate. I don't need any greatswords. Claymore? Bah! Old and busted. If you can't reach 720 AR on a halberd, go home.
- Anonymous
Some enterprising invader charged me with one of these and ended up killing himself with the vexation effect. Fun times were had by all. By "all", I mean me, and not the invader.
- Anonymous
Anyone willing to trade this weapon to me? Tell me what u want in exchange and I'll see if I have it to trade for. Xbox gamertag: psycho se7en.

This weapon can be buffed. Yeah that's cool and all. You know what's even cooler than that? Using HIDDEN WEAPON.
- Anonymous
Not going to lie, beating bosses with a screaming man on a stick is great.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Why dark weapon over lightning blade or darkmoon blade anyways? I'm at 70 fth, so that might be why, but LB and DB give more AR (albeit slightly). Is it the dark damage?
- Anonymous
I forget that the wiki is where a lot of the babies gather through virtue of it being a guide for the noobs who don't know what they're doing. There was a time when i needed these guides, but now i've been playing long enough that i only really get on these to see you *****s defend the weapons that're literally just clearly superior and easy to use, it's so funny. This weapon is literally objectively ez mode, k, the truth fairy is leaving.
- Anonymous
For that damage... 35-40 strength and 60 faith. Don’t forget dark blade. L2 is hyper armor central. Wat? U wanna go further? K sacred oath. Basically ultras=obsolete.

This is one of the final weapons of the souls series, and a player must go throw a very long list of ordeals to obtain it without a lucky trade. It is a crucified king. Of course it’s powerful. Either use it or beat it. Crying online will change nothing.
- Anonymous
This weapon is a monstrosity. Wreck noobs at sl120 invasions
- Anonymous
Lol people are actually complaining about this weapon? It's a Glaive...which means it's susceptible to backstabs and slow. The only thing you can dare complain about is Straight Swords. They are the main offender in this game.
- Anonymous
Great weapon, totally one worth building around. Just curious as to who has been editing the page. Since when has Dark Blade improved R1 Spam? Dark Blade just increases AR; it doersn't effect your stamina costs or swing speed. As for the noob who mentioned that spiel about "strength scaling is better than faith scaling," you really need to do some math on that. Strength increases physical scaling only; Faith increases physical AND dark scaling simultaneously. 2 * D > 1 * C. But dat two-handing DPS doe! Shawdup. Faith also increases the spellbuff of your Talismans/Chimes, which increases the damage added by Dark Blade. A solid Faith investment grants significantly higher AR than a strength investment, even when two-handing. Weapon is a bit wonky when it comes to scaling. Intelligence softcaps at 10; Strength softcaps at 40 (27 if two-handing); and faith softcaps/hardcaps (thanks to the dual scaling, it literally peaks at) 50. Run Yorshka's Chime and Dark Blade with 40/10/50, and you'll be hitting over 800 AR, WITHOUT Clutch/Blindfold. On a weapon with spear-like range, greatsword speed and hyper armor, and a short range quick attack that can't be parried, deals Great hammer-esque poise damage, and packs UGS hyper armor. Yeah, the Crucifix is bull*****on so many levels, it's no wonder why so many hate it.
It's a shame this weapon is found in the ass-end of Nowhere after killing the last dlc boss of The Ringed City. I'm not going to want to bother using it if I've literally beaten the entire game. Also Gael is a bull*****boss that I don't want to suffer through. Hopefully when I finally play Dark Souls 3 and do a Corrupted Paladin build someone will trade me this weapon at a low level or I'll just hack it in if I have to.
- Anonymous
Why didnt she use this weapon when i summoned her for midir. Shira wrecked me in ng+2 to the point where she always almost 1 shot me with the weapon art
- Anonymous
I mean, I guess the guy was lagging since DS3 often has extreme cases of phantom range if your opponent is lagging, but I entered the swamp at SL25 and a guy with full hazel armor and this invaded me and killed me.
It was kinda annoying since for some reason my sunbro couldn't attack him/damage him and he seemed to have way higher stats as he took hardly no damage from my attacks compared to him nearly instantly killing me.
This has nothing to do with this weapon other than that he used it.
Any weapon has phantom range when the guy's lagging and it's stupid to see him swinging him over there and get hit while standing meters away.
But welp. Also I just hate people who don't upgrade to invade low level players. Come on.

You're right Anon, don't worry about the replies, there'll always be scrubs who want to convince themselves that they're actually good at PvP when in actuality it's just that their weapon is broken. This is Santier's spear all over again, you can call them on it all you want, but you'll just get the basic-bitch "git gud" replies or "nuh-uh! It has this weakness!" even though that's besides the point since having a weakness doesn't change whether or not something is broken... People just can't accept reality.
- Anonymous
"Casters need options to blahblashblah". THEY HAVE FUCKING OPTIONS! You want a ss? grab a longsword, make it crystal/dark/lightning. You want a gs? Moonlight gs. You want an ultra greatsword? Astora greatsword, make it crystal/dark/lightning. You want a great hammer? Great wooden hammer, crystal/dark/lightning. Do i need to continue? Even if casters didn't have options, they would need GOOD options, not broken ones. On my sl90 int build i have one of each type of weapon infused crystal and they all perform fantastically. And most of these people who rush to defend this thing every time someone calls it what it is (broken), are people who play at sl120. I don't even need to mention that this has the halberd speed with great hammer poise, we all know how stupid that is.
- Anonymous
I fucking hate this broken piece of shit. It's a halberd with great club poise, a broken weapon art (that can potentially give you more poise!), ridiculous damage and a great club r2. What the fuck where from soft thinking when they made this?! Screw you if you use this, seriously. It's even more broke than the splitleaf.

Lol, that troll comment down below. Made me cringe so hard despite knowing it was a troll. I love how everyone here freely admits this is OP, its refreshing, most other ez mode weapon pages you've got people trying to defend it. Saw some people on the vestiges page saying that vestiges is just "decent" and that pyromancers "need a good spell because there isn't many". LOL. I made sure to list all the commonly used pyromancies, which is honestly most of them, to make a point. Pyromancy is the easiest magic class to win with hands down, so much more versatility in spells, more high damage dealing spells, etc.
ZOMG, for once a weapon doesn't scale with strength! Sacrilegious!... christ.

My favorite weapon in whole 1-3 Souls, only topped off by Bloodbornes Kos Parasite.
Oh how I miss you you tentacled goodness.

+10 chaos and +10 dark maces do more damage than this, do strike damage, less stat requirements, great WA, acquired at the start of the game, weigh less and use less stamina. This weapon has a cool look, longer reach and interesting WA. All things considered, i'll stick to the mace.

So if I were to trade this to a low my low lvl character, but it’s +5... do I need to make a weapon +5 on my low? Or +10, considering +5 is max for this weapon.

Is anyone willing to gift one of these to me at the start of the game? I don't really use halberds but I want to try out a Dark build and see how I like this weapon but I'd have to go through so much to get it that it's basically like telling me to start an NG+ to use a weapon. If anyone is willing, please message me on PSN @ NorthernDragon. Thank you.
