Greatsword of Judgment is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.

A ceremonial sword, held in Pontiff Sulyvahn's left hand, respresenting the judgement of the moon, but with magic far closer to sorcery than any existing lunar power. Its dark blue hues, deeper than the darkest moon, reflect sorcerer Sulyvahn's true nature.

Skill: Stance of Judgment
Assume stance to unleash dark magic. Use normal attack for a lunging thrust, and strong attack to emit side-sweeping wave.

Notes and Tips:

  • Cannot be Buffed or Infused.
  • Reinforced with Titanite Scale.
  • WA buff gives non-scaling +80 magic AR.
  • WA buff will stay active for approximately 35 seconds.
  • The pattern found on the Greatsword of Judgement is somewhat similar in style to the engraving found on the Slave Knight armor set, though they may not be connected.
  • Shares some visual designs with Ludwig's Holy Blade from Bloodborne.
  • Uses Bastard Sword moveset, but with a thrust and a shockwave for its weapon art.
  • The weapon art's strong attack deals more damage when both the blade and sword beam hit the target.
  • An excellent alternative to the Moonlight Greatsword for Intelligence builds with physical stat investments, for this greatsword performs the same type of shockwave minus the vortex, and it does not degrade at the same rate as the Moonlight Greatsword.
  • The Greatsword of Judgement has a range of 33.0774xl on the 1h R1 and 35.6918xl on the 2h R1.

Scaling & Softcaps:

  • 17/15/12 = 419 AR = Base Stats
  • 40/15/12 = 471 AR = Str Softcap
  • 17/40/12 = 473 AR = Dex Softcap
  • 17/15/40 = 493 AR = Int Softcap
  • 17/15/60 = 506 AR = Int Hardcap

Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.

Having D scaling in str and dex make this thing almost always do more damage than the moonlight greatsword. Also weighs less, has a cooler glow from the weapon art. If you’re having trouble choosing between the two, I alternated between both in a playthrough and this almost always did more damage.

      • Go with bastard sword in pvp, then buff it with resin or do the WA to prove that it's a normal sword.

And then secretly swap into this and do an outstanding BEAM which no one can foresee it coming because they think it's still a bastard sword

        • I know people say this about literally every sword in the game but seriously, why doesn't it have a thrust R2? It has it on the weapon art sure but I feel like another one would be nice given that Mr. Sulyvahn does it so much

I really don't understand the reason to compare this to the Moonlight Greatsword:

They both revolve around magic damage sure, but have completely different ways of functioning. One revolves around self-buffs through attacking with it's Stance WA, and has a balance of phys/magic damage, isn't highly demanding of stat requirements. The other is pure magic-oriented with a less flexible WA but has ranged R2's which drain some durability, needs more Int to make the most of it.

Personally, I'd say just use what you think would suit you the most in the long-term, but PLEASE take into account of the features each weapon has instead of mindlessly comparing damage

still prefer the moonlight greatsword although this is better the moonlight greatswords weapon art is more fun to use in my opinion, nor do I like having to do a weapon art to get the most damage possible out of the sword.

I really miss this weapon. A dueling monster.
I ran it along with Crescent Moon sword to catch folks when they ran away.
                Good times.

I love DS3 because after all this time, even with a "solved" meta, I can still be surprised. Someone hit me with the WA of this thing and blew off about 70% of my HP instantly. Taught me real quick to respect a GSoJ

                  • Anonymous

Love this thing, surprisingly good damage and nobody ever expects the weapon art because it mostly looks like a normal greatsword

This thing totally saved me when I was running a Caster against Gravekeeper's Champion. Slammed his shield aside and riposte'd for the win.

Scales mostly with INT up to 40 softcap. STR gives less damage per level but still decent until 40 softcap (26 when two-handing). DEX doesn't seem to be worth leveling unless you have a ton of points to spare. 26 STR/15 DEX/40 INT seems optimal

I run a dex build with the minimum int req for rapport and this greatsword hits really hard. The magic buff from the wa adds some nice extra to the AR and the proyectile hits for over 400 damage. What a beast!

                          • Anonymous

Honestly love this weapon on a melee/mage build. If you wear heavier armor and save any casting till after their first estus, you can pick up some easy kills with a surprise WA when they go to heal since most people don't seem to recognize this sword vs the MGS.

Don’t use this if you wanna go full 60 INT, use this on a 40 INT build, there’s so little extra damage with the full 60. Use that extra 20 for END, VIG or even ATT for more weapon art.

my favourite thing about this sword is that without the moon runes on the side its just a regular ass sword but it can shoot lasers and stuff

                                best sword imo

What do we have here, another slow ass shiity greatsword with useless ranged attack as compensation for coward and poor skilled casuls who are constantly getting destroyed by decent players, especially seasoned-pro pkcs users. I do enjoy the irony though as the shiity greatsword demands high INT but it's users are proven idiots just by picking up such a garbage weapon. super pro tip: pick up pkcs => git gud => be a pro.

Gsog > mgs. Why? Because 1. This one has a good reason to deal physical damage, and can boost it's own magic damage by doing a mighty stab or a powerful magic wave. 2. As stated by it's own description, the mgs from ds3 isn't even a shell of what it was. In fact, it's the worst version of the moonlight greatsword we ever had. In ds1 we had an absolute beast and in bloodborne it was even better.

                                    • This weapon really surprised me. Aside from the strength and Dexter requirement, it's a very nice weapon for magic class.
I like how you can shoot a purple curve beam like the moonlight sword did in Ds1.

This weapon is really weird on how you build for it. I feel that most people compare it to MLGS, but you don't spec it like it all to much. I'd rather compare it to something like a Crystal Claymore, where you pump your intelligence, but you can still raise your strength and dexterity to get more out of the physical side of things. The main difference here is that unlike an infused weapon, you must level strength and dexterity to get the most out of your damage. On a 120 build, while two-handing with 26 strength, 34 dexterity, and 40 intelligence, you will get 668 damage while your buff is active. By comparison, a Dark Claymore that is two-handed with 26 strength and dexterity with 30 intelligence and faith only reaches 632 damage. Both values are split damage, but with GSoJ it the damage is almost split evenly between your physical and magic damage. In turn, it does considerably more to defenses. The big caveats are that the R2s on GSoJ are the slashing motion attacks, not the stab that Claymore has, along with having to keep up with your buff at all times. This is subjective to your thoughts on the weapon art, but I prefer the laser of GSoJ to the guardbreak that Claymore has, as all you need to do is unlock and learn to free-aim the laser, if you lock on it goes straight into the ground. So yeah, when it comes to damage comparisons, this is the highest hitting greatsword in the game.

TLDR: MGLS is considerably worse than GSoJ, you just need to build specifically for this weapon.

"You think the Greatsword of Judgement is better than the Moonlight Greatsword?"

I do, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.

Me: Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! YES!

Best stat spread for this (at sl125 meta level): 27 Str / 40 Dex / 40 Int 27 Str is to hit the 40 softcap when you two-hand the weapon (27 x 1.5 = 40.5), 40 dex and int for the other softcaps. If you use the most stat efficient starting class for this weapon (Warrior) you can have a stat spread of 35 / 6 / 40 / 16 / 27 / 40 / 40 / 9 / 11. Use the Prisoner Chain to reach 40 Vigor and Endurance, as long as you're using medium armor you can stay below 70% equip load as long as you have the Favor +3 and Havel +3. That leaves you with an extra ring slot, I personally use the Life Ring +3 to make up for the lowered absorption of the Prisoner Chain.

I once had a character who had this for a main weapon, and I actually LIKED THIS THING. In contrast? I wouldn't bother with the Moonlight Greatsword due to what I knew about the HIGH durability consumption of its weapon art. You read that right: I ignored a weapon that's great for pure sorcerors OVER A DURABILITY ISSUE. And you know what? I don't care how good the weapon art of that thing is, I don't bother with weaponry that is put at risk of breaking thanks to its weapon art.

                                                • I was using this for my PvE build 20/20/35 so far which you'd think would be meh as far as viable builds go in PvP, but defending against some invaders taught me this thing is absolutely lethal. New favorite combo two hand R1 > jumping attack > beam catches a ton of people. Could roll into R1 > jumping attack > then beam to catch them chugging... when I have enough stamina to do that I'll give it a go. Is it meta? No but who cares. It's fun and badass looking.

Right hand Moonlight Greatsword and left hand this bad boi, buff it and lay down Moonlight’s Judgement! >;)

                                                    • Anonymous

You can glitch buff "Stance" weapons with this. I use this to buff the Frayed Blade, and, my god, it looks cool. That said, it's +80 magic AR and only lasts 35 seconds, so it's more for the looks than OP damage (3 damage types gets a lot of reduction).

                                                      • Anonymous

Very good with a proper qual/int build with decent attunement. Nobody really uses magic damage in melee, especially for invasions. Only real downsides are you need to keep the buff up to do good damage, and the flamberge moveset doesn't have the stab attacks for controlling spacing

                                                        • Anonymous

this wiki is pretty misleading. it's not really comparable to the moonlight greatsword. moonlight greatsword's beam attack is from doing charged R2s. it costs no FP and it consumes durability. it also does not buff the moonlight greatsword. the GS of judgment's beam attack is from using the weapon art, it costs FP but no durability. the charged R2s do nothing special. one of the main advantages to the moonlight greatsword is that it's easy on a build. it only has significant scaling from a single stat so it requires less investment to reach the weapon's initial soft caps. in addition, since its special ability costs no FP, (only the L2 thrust attack) it doesn't require any attunement. so you can make an SL 125 intelligence character with only 10 attunement, leaving you enough stat points for 40 vgr and a lot of endurance and vitality. the GS of judgment can only compete with the moonlight greatsword if you keep the buff up, which might demand some attunement, or if you invest in strength, dex, and int. i think from soft simply didn't balance all weapons around the same expected "meta level." they don't care about meta levels. the pvp is not intended to be balanced in the first place, the focus is on invasions. i personally like it but i acknowledge that it's not balanced. some weapons become way stronger at high levels. after all, the max level is not 125 or 140 or whatever. i can't imagine why you'd really want to, but you can go way beyond that level and keep playing, so i think they balanced some weapons around the presumption that some players would actually go up to 40 str, 40 dex, 40 int. or even higher. basically every weapon with balanced scaling in more than 2 stats will obviously be much better at high levels. even morne's greathammer which only has scaling in 2 stats is very hard to use effectively on a low SL build, but does exceed the other greathammers at very high levels. if you have 99 str and 99 fth then obviously a weapon that scales with both stats is going to be better than a weapon that just has really good str scaling. but that makes it worse at level 125 obviously. same with weapons like twin princes' greatsword, dancers' swords, etc. some weapons are just considered mediocre by the general community but if you plug them into a character planner and set all the stats to 99, their AR goes way over other weapons in their class. even the dancers' swords, with 3x split damage, actually does absurd damage with maxed out stats. using a damage calculator you can see that even with 3x split damage it does the most damage of any curved sword, but at a reasonable SL it does a lot less damage than other curved swords. so greatsword of judgment falls somewhere on this continuum. it's not that bad, just 3 stats, but it's definitely worse than pure physical weapons, or the moonlight greatsword which gets nearly all its scaling from one stat. in light of that, the main thing to think about in deciding whether to use moonlight GS or GS of judgment is what's your SL. it's not like you can just take your moonlight GS build and swap a few of the stats into str and dex and get the same effect. it's objectively less stat efficient, but with an objectively higher AR potential due to its multi stat scaling. if they intended every weapon to be balanced at SL 125 then they'd make multi-stat scaling weapons really OP at higher levels. instead they did something sort of in between. multi-stat weapons aren't awful at 125 but they're slightly worse. that, in turn, means they aren't absurdly OP at higher levels but they are stronger. the multi stat scaling effect is sort of toned down by giving them worse scaling coefficients overall. but a weapon with four D's can still do more damage than a weapon with a single S if your stats are high enough. so that's the main difference. moonlight GS will always be better at 125 than GS of judgment, you can make a build where that's not the case but why would you? the optimal moonlight GS build would be better than your build where GS of judgment is better, so you'd just want to respec. in order to really use GS of judgment you also want attunement so it's actually 4 competing stats. compared to moonlight's 1. they did buff this weapon and i like it, i still like to play with it even though i don't have any high SL characters, but it's definitely not comparable to moonlight greatsword. and unfortunately any 125 build you could make where GS of judgment is actually good will have a pretty weird stat spread. like not very many weapons want something like 25 str, 25 dex, 35 int. that's a really unusual balance of stats. the only other weapon that calls for something like that is the dancers' enchanted swords. and even that would be the wrong build, you'd rather do 30 str, 30 dex, 25 int. so if you do make a build for GS of judgment you're basically gonna be using just this one weapon plus some less efficient backup weapon like a crystal longsword. i guess it's a decent build for a refined weapon + crystal magic weapon, but it's not a great buff. and buff builds don't like to switch weapons anyway, and your GS of judgment already has its own buff. it just seems like a waste in general. so i definitely consider this a "high SL weapon."

                                                          • Anonymous

40/40str and dex with 40int gets this at roughly 690 AR when buffed, currently using a build at SL 115. Most invasions it destroys hosts, let alone fight-clubs, just a nice beautiful and majestic weapon to play with, however always have great soul dreg just in-case you ever get put into a scenario when you’re forced to play defensive ;) Overall 10/10 weapon

                                                            • Anonymous

This weapon just get's beat by the old Moonlight Greatsword in every way. The Moonlight has a better base magic damage to physical ratio, better intelligence scaling, better range, more hyper armor when 2 handing, and it's weapon art projectiles do more damage. Even in the weapon art category, the Moonlight has an advantage as it's attacks consume weapon durability, this thing will eat into your FP reservoir. Not ideal, if your a caster, as that FP could be better put to use casting spells or applying your own intelligence-scaling buff. Perhaps this is best utilized by intelligent warriors who never leveled attunement and have that base level FP pool hanging around unused. But as a sorcerer's weapon, just get the Old moonlight. It's got physical stat requirements lower than half the straight swords.

                                                              • Anonymous

Originally was going to just use this sword as a stopgap until I got the MLGS, but ended up using it as my main weapon. At 40 INT and minimum STR/DEX, the Greatsword of Judgment and Moonlight Greatsword perform almost identical. Moveset is almost identical as well, with the shockwave being the only difference. GoJ's shockwave consumes FP, whereas MLGS consumes durability. If you are planning on going 60 INT and being primarily a caster, MLGS is better. However, if you want to stay at 40 INT and use support sorceries like Snap Freeze, Mist, and Poison Spores (Storyteller WA), then GoJ is a perfect weapon and invest those 20 extra points into other stats. Use the Farron Ring and a Simple Shield to keep your FP costs down and your sword buffs constantly going.

On the right build this can do as much damage as an Ultra Greatsword (700-800+) per combo. Really underrated.

                                                                  • Anonymous

This is one of the most overlooked low sl invasion weapons in the game. At sl37 with 12 str, 16 dex, 25 int +scholar ring this thing does like 220 damage per swing while buffed. I use it on my darkmoon crusader build. it's awesome.

                                                                    • Anonymous

How to get his clothes down though...

                                                                          • Anonymous

The weapon art poke basically acts as a buff as hitting someone with it is almost impossible due to the horrendous speed and telegraphingand when you do land it you might as well have done the r2 wa or even a charged heavy.

                                                                            • With these status

                                                                                • Anonymous

Really with there was a Greatsword that could do it, this one seems thematically perfect for it as well :(

That being said on my Pyro/Sorcerer character (first play through, stats a mess) this weapon is AWESOME! Very cool to use and pretty good damage, i have it at +3 at the moment. If only could make Pyro Flame or Boss weapons be infused it could be made perfect :(

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Reasons not to use this over MLG : You're not a melee mage and MLG has better Int scaling

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

This thing has poise like no tomorrow. You'll even win against some greatweapons. Need to do a *****load of damage? Standard WA with Leo Ring, Magic Clutch, and Crown of Dusk. Hold down L1, and when they go for an R1 turn their health pool into a puddle. Has huge poise on both WA's and allows you to Battlemage like no other.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

(Which no one uses because why thrust when you can shoot an energy wave?)

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

At 40str + 40dex + 30int AR is 675 without buff and 666 buffed. Awesome weapon and, don't know why, pretty uncommon to see ppl using on PvP.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Unlocking and using the projectile version of the weapon art is seriously punishing for anyone who tries to roll behind you for a cheeky backstab. With 27s/40d/37Int, I've hit people for almost 900 when the slash and beam both connect.
The buff is also nothing to take lightly. I'm glad the duration was increased as it's on par with Moonlight gs...At least, with 6 attunement (warrior base) and using the sword as an actual weapon and not some offhand crutch.
I think the biggest issue people have with this weapon is the expectation that an int scaling means they need to be a mage. I mean, with the Darkmoon ring, you can slot snap freeze or other utility spells for an extra edge since they have low fp costs, but you don't need to be a hairy wizard for the weapon's qualities to shine. Just stat investment. (Scales pretty poorly after 27str, so that's 13 right there for int which is typically 3 per level up to 37)
The stab for the wa is worthless, don't use it.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I really wish there was a point to using this over the MLGS. The only thing it has over it is the weapon art (which eats FP) and the buff is temporary. They should of given this weapon the same moveset as the Hollowslayer with the way the R1s work and give it thrusts. Then perhaps it would have more of a purpose for INT related builds looking for a weapon.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I prefer this to the moonlight great sword. It deals more damage while buffed, works well in tandem with dusk crown and magic clutch ring, and once you get the hang of it, you can one shot people by hitting them with the side sweep at close range.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Does slightly less damage than the Moonlight GS without the buff & noticeably more with the buff. Doesn't seem to have better poise or projectiles tho.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                            THAT WOULD BE SOOOO AWESOME

I mean poise is working as intended and has been all along despite near all long-time fans protesting.
