Hollow Gem is an Upgrade Material in Dark Souls 3.

Hollow Gem

hollow gem

A gem of infused titanite. A stone plentiful in Londor, land of Hollows.

Used in infusion to create Hollow weapons.

Hollow weapons are said to peer into the essence of its wielder, whose luck boosts attack.

Hollow Gem Usage

Hollow Gem Locations

Notes

  • Requires the Profaned Coal to infuse.
  • Hollow weapons can be buffed.
  • Hollow Weapons and Shields scale with Luck, and also grant a bonus amount to your Luck stat.
  • Hollow weapons grant up to +5 Luck at +10 upgrade level, only when your character is Hollow.
  • The Luck boost stacks by equipping Hollow weapons in both hands, providing you with 10 extra Luck.
  • The Luck boost does increase your bleed/poison capabilities, although not shown on menu.
  • Hollow scaling is C in average. Some unremarkable weapons perform slightly better with Hollow.
  • Rings of Sacrifice and Purging Stones can postpone or erase your Hollow condition. This will negate the bonus Luck.
  • Unlike all physical gems it negatively effects innate damage. This being because it has a penalty for increasing aux effects.

its so annoying that these are locked behind a coal much later on. hollow/lck builds are locked into being lame as hell and using a STRAIGHT SWORD until ****ing yhorm.

      • Anonymous

Did a luck build abt a year ago after doing str, dex, pyro, magic and faith runs and after getting the profaned coal it became the most fun playthrough I've ever done.

If you look at the wiki page for the luck stat, someone has trawled out all the hidden luck scaling values in the game. Besides man-grub's staff and Anri's sword, the highest scaling you'll ever get is a C, and that's for blood/poison, which wrecks the base damage too much to be worthwhile. The highest Hollow scaling letter is D. You can't feasibly do pure luck, you still need strength and dex for melee, and magic is a foregone conclusion

Barbed straight sword is a great hollow weapon. I've been using it this playthrough and man its great. Have 41 luck with the +10 barbed and a +8 Hollow shield with Lloyds sword ring and pontiff right ring for bonus damage and with 30 strength I'm doing 389 no rings activated, 411 with pontiff and 461 with Lloyds and pontiff right, ntm I put blessed on it for another 30 dam and with the bonus bleed from hollow, its a pretty good weapon. Sure youll kill most enemies before they bleed, but you'll have no problem bleeding tanky enemies

It's a bit unfortunate that this is really a "quality" style infusion that scales fairly weakly off of several stats. The advantage of it vs. the other physical infusions is adding another stat to scale, but it takes a lot of investment to start shining. This makes "pure" luck builds pretty much unviable, because the same amount of levels devoted to any other stats would result in something stronger (comparing, say, 66 Str or 60 Dex to 60+ luck and base requirements/VIG/END/VIT besides).

              • Anonymous

At meta levels, very few weapons do well with this infusion. People tout the Greatsword as having great Hollow scaling, but at 40 STR + 50 LCK, Heavy is still better. Greataxe seems to benefit the most from Hollow infusion. But I think it was intentional for Hollow infusion to not become the best physical infusion until absurdly high levels. Someone who has consumed so many souls has surely died many, many times... Or perhaps, has had their true strength teased out by a Londor pilgrim many, many times...

If you go to max level, nearly every weapon gets the highest AR with hollow infusion, while still being buffable. So, start farming those gems, big bois

this gem is best used on heavy weapons dealing strike damage. For example, the cathedral knight greatsword has insane damage when infused with this with the right stats. A mace also works pretty well, and any hammer too. It's just a great infusion for heavy weapons in a balanced build if you level up your luck first. In addition you get more drop rate which also means more souls if yous sell duplicates so when starting a new character I would 100% recommend using this gem as soon as possible.

I noticed it says increases aux effects in the notes section, so would this apply to frost as well. I know you can't hollow infuse an innate frost but would it scale frost weapons buff?

Well, after making a glasscannon ninja gandalf (attune/dex/int and staying at 10 end,vig and vit) ive decided to go for a luck build based on inflicting bleed n poisons. Got sellsword twinblades as my main weapon atm. Not sure if im gonna go into spellcasting with the mangrub staff yet or not. Will more than likely have anri ss as a main for pve when I reach that part of the game but for now these twinblades are doing ok with base stats required to wield. Need to reallocate my stats when I can as I put 18 into str to effectively wield lothric knight shield at the beginning but now I have 100% physical protection from the crest shields and silver kite shields I no longer need that much str. Ill post an update when I have gotten to a good sl and have added the bleed inf to the twinblades and hollowed my shield for luck boost

At low levels I can see how this Infusion can be a jerk, since compared to other infusions that utilize another 1 to 2 stat, this one requires Luck which isn't used in any other cases. However, this infusion DOES do more damage than any other infusion at VERY VERY VERY late game, meaning around level 802.

                          • Anonymous

Taken from the best infusion in the game to being significantly the worst. Fromsoft and its nuclear approach to nerfs made luck builds unviable. Blood gem does no damage and hollow + rogue won't bleed anyone ever.

I have a lot more respect for hollow gems after playing a hollow build for the first time, especially because they are fairly rare compared to other gems. There's like two or three in the base game, and they can't be farmed unless you have the ringed city as far as I can tell.

Im currently doing a luck build right now. Unfortunately, many weapons are only really good when scaled with another stat as well as luck. The washing pole performs excellently on a 40/40 Dex Luck build, for example. However, the only weapon I have found thusfar to even make a luck only build worth considering is Anri's Straight Sword (hereby referred to as ASS) ASS is the only reason this build works. With ASS+5 and 15 Faith and 12 Str, you have one of the best PVE builds available. Simply use Blessed Weapon on ASS, use replenishment, and equip your Etheral Oak Shield and toss on your Sun Princess Ring. At 40 luck, ASS deals just shy of 400 AR. Add about 30-35 points from Blessed Weapon and you deal respectable damage, but thats not it. With all that HP regen, you can win duels easily by playing around at low HP with Red & Blue tearstones and backing off to let your regen take you to more comfortable levels. Its not exactly fair, but you are playing a pure luck build.

Hello. Did you know? Hollow infused weapons also increase your defense and resistance stats. Quite the lovely bit of information missed here.

                                  • Anonymous

With 40 dex and base strength a sharp gem on any infusable weapons will ALWAYS outperform a hollow infused weapon. Even at 99 luck, sharp weapons will always be better. And that's not even getting into 40/40 strength/dex builds with refined gems So honestly whats the point? Unless youre doing a dedicated bleed build with literally no investment in dex or strength beyond base weapon requirements, but then your physical damage is atrocious even with high luck and a hollow gem, so you might as well just use a blood gem to procc bleed as much as possible

                                    • Anonymous

You would imagine that hollow infused weapons would scale their damage with your hollowing. Right? But no, They had to make it scale with the worst stat in Dark Souls since Resistance.

There hollow gem can be picked up by running and rolling up rocks once up point up keep running But don’t forget to eliminate the curse givers

It says +10 weapons grants +5 Luck, does this mean +0 and +1 weapons don't provide any Luck, only from +2 upwards?

                                          • Anonymous

Need more test but I think the Luck boost INCREASES the poison and bleed capabilities. But it doest show up on the menu.

Ok a had a corvian great scythe and decided I wanted to make a hollow build so I infused it with hollow and went to reallocate my stats but from 14 luck al the way to 32 the damage did not change does this weapon not have luck scaling even when hollow infused ( btw it is +9)

                                              • Anonymous

So, this gem is more for the undead bacon out there that want a weapons for pure damage rather than bleed or poison. Some bosses in the game are immune to bleed, poison, lightning, etc. This just buffs physical for those specialising in luck. Neat.

                                                • Anonymous

Looking for weapons in todays meta that would perform moderately or better with this infusion. (I have 40Str/40Dex/60Lck and want to experiment.)

                                                  • Anonymous

Did they debuff hollow infusions? I remember hollow was good in adding DPS to weapon (excluding the bleeding build up), but now it seems usless except with certain weapons.

                                                    • Anonymous

Aside from Katanas which are better Hollow than Sharp on a Luck/Dexterity build (at 20/40/40 they outperform Sharp before the bonus luck). It seems that Sharp outperforms Hollow infused weapons when one-handed (sometimes by a pretty large margin), but Hollow outperforms Sharp when two-handed in most cases thanks to the unaltered Strength scaling. For example the Carthus Curved Greatsword with 10 bonis luck has 498 AR one-handed when Hollow infused but 500 AR when Sharp infused. But when two-handed it hits 532 AR Hollow and 512 AR sharp.

                                                      • Anonymous

Tested bleed buildup value with and without hollow infusion, including with and without an offhand hollow weapon, and I can confirm that the +5 value to luck does not increase bleed buildup, rather bleed buildup will ONLY be determined by your "true" Luck stat.

I'm convinced there's only two reasons to use the Hollow Gem:

                                                          A: Farming
                                                          B: You rely on DOTs

There's no other reason to use this gem.

Everyone is talking about farming for these things and I have a minimum of 13 at the end of a playthrough and end up selling them cause I can't stand being human bacon... I'm on PC and not even grinding.

                                                            • Anonymous

So i guess, the best method would be to get to Ringed Inner Wall's bonfire, equip every Item Discovery item possible, kill the four pilgrims behind the bonfire, then going forward, killing the two guarding the stairs, the one in the middle of the stairs and the two at the bottom.

Or just do half a run and reset at the bonfire to repeat.

                                                              • Anonymous

The red-robed pygmies, regardless of whether or not they inflict curse, can drop these. The ones that don't inflict curse can also drop lightning gems.

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

400 item find, 40 tries got none. Took turns killing the 2 story teller corvians in road of sacrifices. Pretty sure it is a bug, as I farmed this***** before on my other characters and I'd say I got 1 every 10 or 15 kills or so.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Not sure if the regular lightning-throwing variants drop them, but I'm 100% sure that the cursed pygmies or whatever drop them.

                                                                      • Anonymous

I got two going through the area, I'm not sure on any of the specifics, I'd have to go through the area again to pinpoint exactly which mobs I fought, if someone more dilligent doesn't beat me to it I'll post some details after further investigation.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

This can be your second hollow gem even before reaching Lothric Castle or so you don't have to farm one from the storytellers.

Just rush past all the enemies til you reach the second bonfire and then you need only to cross the bridge and pick it up.

                                                                                • For those who care about the higher stats---

                                                                                  99 Hollowing

At 99 STR, 99 DEX, 99 Luck: only a few weapons have a significant AR increase using a HOLLOW gem than using a REFINED (I'm talking 1-10 AR difference). One that surprised me was the Greatsword. It went from 716 to 765. The infusible Katanas, Flamberge, and spears all increase 20-30 AR, but I really couldn't find anything else that increased much or at all. The Corvian Great Scythe goes up 15 AR. Bleed damage goes up a bit, but not really by much. I'd spend points elsewhere and use the Rouge. Just saying.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Luck Stat page states that at 99 hollow you get +10 luck from holding a Hollow weapon. Here it states that a Hollow weapon only gives up to +5. Test to see which it actually is?

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • I got carthus curved sword in 4th kill and then walked to the carthus greatsword skeleton and killed him once and got both swords, then I try to farm this and do 76 runs with 333 item discovery and still didn't receive a single hollow gem hehe xd

                                                                                            • Anonymous

It seems alot of players have trouble getting these gems from the staff wielding crow things. Here's my tips:-use rusted coins-use Covetous Gold Serpent Ring -use the mimic head item-train your luck to 30+ before farming-only kill the crow that wields the staff (only one able to drop hollow gems)I just got 3 gems in 20 minutes using all items listed above.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

The staff wielding Corvian nearest to the Halfway Fortress bonfire may not drop them.

                                                                                                • This gem is great for bleed builds, if not insanely overpowered, since you can get 35-45 luck, use a hollow weapon at +10 to even it out at 40 or 50, which of course increases inherent bleed on weapons, and can be buffed with carthas rogue on top of that.Recommended using on weapons at C scaling or lower and opt for high luck stat investment, and this makes for a really cool pve playstyle, if not an incredibly boring and non-mythodical playstyle, as well as being used in pvp being considered borderline douchebaggery for any user.Recommended for greatshield users to let the bleed sink in while they blindly "tank" the hits, and for high NG+ cycles

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I might have found better way to farm hollow gems. Item discovery 370. Here are two routes I used:1. Halfway Fortress Bonfire. Go back to Road of Sacrifices, kill staff wielding corvian, run back. One run took less than 30 seconds. I did it for about 25 minutes, so I killed ~50 corvians. Loot: 3 staffs and 1 hollow gem.2. Farron Keep Perimeter Bonfire. Go towards Abyss Watchers. Sneak past Dark Wraiths (I used Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring) or run in front of them (dodge). Sneaking past them is easier and takes only about 2 more seconds. There is a ledge that leads right to the corvian with staff. Kill him, teleport back. One run takes about 45 seconds. I did 15 runs. Loot: 6 staffs and 4 hollow gems.It might be just my luck, but I really think that corvian near Farron Keep has better droprate. The sample size is also really small. If you struggle with getting hollow gems, give a second route a try.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Took advice and a previous comment down below, i infused this into warden twinnblades with carthus rouge buff and luck at 40, and holy skagsack the bleed is real, do you even bleed? It is good fun and amusing though. With spin slash combo into a group of mobs watch the blood fly and the frames drop

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Confirmed drop from Storytellers (staff wielding corvians in Road of Sacrifice), but the drop rate is atrocious. With 440 item discovery (40 luck, Avarice/Sage Rapier/Covetous ring/Rusted Gold Coin) I got 14 Storyteller's staffs before getting one hollow gem. But it is there.

                                                                                                          • it appears the infusion has a softcap of 40 luck. After 40 luck its 3 points of luck for 1 point of AR (tested with hollowed Wardens Twinblades). If you're hollow yourself and go hollow infusion, you don't want to level your luck stat past 35. Having 35 luck + 5 from being hollow takes you to the softcap of 40. If i had to guess on the scaling, I'd say its a low CWhere this infusion really shines I believe is in the balance between base damage, maintaining other scalings (dex), still being able to buff the weapon AND the boost to bleed damage. @40 luck with hollow infusion you get +7 to bleed (34 to 41 for warden twinblades and Onikiri) and you can still buff it with Carthus Rouge. On top of that, for a C dex rating you still get 2 AR per point of dex, so going dex/luck would be also viable.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

On the Bandit's Knife (Thief's starting weapon) the Strength and Dexterity scaling actually increase with Hollow infusion, if only slightly. That being said, with only 8 Luck and 0 Hollowing on my quality build - 30 str and dex atm - a +7 Hollow Bandit's Knife has a couple AR over the regular version; 106 + 61 vs. 112 + 53, respectively.Given that the lowest possible Luck stat is 7, the increased scaling damage is due to the strength and dex scaling bump.I should also point out that the Refined infusion actually hurts the Bandit's Knife at 30 str/dex vs no infusion, despite going from D/D to C/C scaling-wise. Plus the Bleed effect goes from 33 to 34 with Poison infusion. So yeah, this weapon is a little weird.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

I can't decide which weapon to hollow for it though. Was thinking of using the Uchi or a Ghru sword (or 2) but I'm not sure and would like some advice.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                                      • Infusing a weapon will always reduce the base damage, but in some cases it seems to improve Strength and Dexterity scaling and in other cases it seems to very slightly decrease them. In all cases, a Hollow weapon scales rather poorly with Luck and gains more AR from Strength and Dexterity, to the point where the weapon usually ends up slightly better than a normal, uninfused weapon just off softcapped Str/Dex and its own +5 boost to Luck. But for a build with high Strength and Dexterity investment, a weapon infused with a Refined Gem would always be better. It's a very odd infusion. I'd say it's really only worth it if you already have 40 Strength and/or 40 Dexterity, at which point raising Luck to 40 as well would be the only way to get more physical AR. It's probably not very well suited for lower level characters unless you really, really like status effects and aren't too concerned about the attack rating.

Could potentially mean leaving luck less than 40 on a luck build?
