Man this was such a weird weapon to bring back from DS2.

It was the most obscure katana in the game, with one of the laziest item descriptions in the series, in a game that largely served as a testing ground for funky weapon and spell mechanics - and a member of A-team goes "yeah I wanna revive that for the sequel. throw in a description about some random who hung out with Wolnir to eat burritos and vape."

And here we are. Another Souls, another iteration of a sword that people kinda sorta care about, but not really.

So, based on the lore description, this is implied to be an ancient Blacksteel Katana from DS2, right?

Best katana in the game if you can get over the range. A sharp will out damage a chaos blade at high levels, and can be buffed. A dark infused will outdamage a frayed blade with the right stats, and you can parry with it.

I use this on a build with 82 dex, 82 vit, 60 vig, 20 attunement, 25 faith and 12 str. It is just enough to 2 hand it and I Spam parries. I Infuse it to sharp and upgrade it to plus 10, and it DESTROYS everyone.

From my experience, this is the only Katana in the game better used one handed rather than two handed, as the one handed R2: looks cooler and has more range than its two handed variant, which makes up for the short range on the weapon.

Killed the mimic in such a way that he fell off the ledge. Black Blade spawned in mid air. Reload of the area doesn't fix it. Literally can't collect it on this play through until NG+. There goes that build.

Someone needs to adjust the scaling on intelligence and faith with chaos infusion. I can confirm that Chaos Black Blade scaling is B, not C, on both int. and faith.

This weqpon is weird it requires 16 str but scales really bad with str it seems like it is encouraged to weaild it 2H at 12 str exclusively yet people are saying the 1H heavy attack is the best feature. Why fromsoft why?

using this weapon while listening to the song Black Blade is very fun while everything you fight takes like 200 damage because literally everything is resistant to slash but your just having a fun little time

Infusing it with a dark gem not only improves darkness, but also makes it turbo edgey.

I wouldn't recommend using this weapon strictly 2 handed as I feel it's strength is from the heavy attacks while it is 1H. PvP and PvE both benefit from 1H heavy attacks as it is unique to the katana moveset.
The horizontal slash and holding the strong attack can let you finish off most enemies with the slash, especially if surrounded (With good judgement on when to do so) without using FP. You can feel the short reach with the light attacks and I will still sometimes miss attacks after a roll into a light attack on bosses or some enemies in general compared to one with the little bit range advantage. I personal use this katana along with a second Katana with longer reach adding mixups or for when I just need the range.

I love letting the Mimic and Demon fight against each other. The mimic does surprisingly good damage against the demon and is a easy way to get rid of it. Sorry if it sounds like I can't pick up a fair fight against the demon 1v1 but it's just hilarious seeing the lanky mimic defeating the demon in like 15 seconds. So, if you want this weapon but it's to hard because of the demon constantly firing try aggroing both and let them fight each other.

This as well as all katanas (apart form the frayed blade) actually get a good dmg boost from Hollow infusions. Especially this katana. I'm getting 466 with 40 LUCK, STR and DEX. which isn't bad considering it's honestly not that must investment. The bleed build up is alright as well.

Not like duravility matters, but for anyone with a phobia of breaking your weapon, this katana has more durability than most others

This blade is absolutely amazing. It's short but you'd never know; half of the moves include a good step forward. I used to think it just needed a standing thrust attack (like the Longsword R2) but after PvPing with it (40 dex, 60 int, SL 132, sharp infusion with crystal magic weapon) having the redundancy of moves that start the same but have different swing speeds (for example, WA R1 and 1H R2) has allowed me to catch so many parry spammers off guard. And make so mistake, that 2H R2 is the king of roll-catching, it's perfectly timed to land and, as only as their not <30% load, you'll hit them a lot.

I have found this sword to be the bane of parry spammers. Its short range and advancing attacks make its rhythm hard to grasp, and it has enough speed to pressure a habitual button-masher into sacrificing their own rhythm. The flow of the fight is best controlled with weapons like this one. Be careful, however, to vary the time you hold your heavy attacks. If you always go for the full charge, you’re predictable.
