Dagger is a Weapon in Dark Souls 3.



Standard small dagger.

Small daggers lack power or reach, but can deal quick consecutive hits due to their light weight. Highly effective when used for critical hits, such as after parrying or attacking from behind.

Skill: Quickstep
Instantly step behind or around the side of foes. Especially effective when locked on to target.



Notes and Tips:

  • Can be Infused and Buffed.
  • Reinforced with Titanite.
  • The Dagger has the highest critical stat for all weapons, making it a popular reposte tool.
    • Contrary to popular belief, "Chaos" isn't the objectively best infusion, and this weapon should instead be infused for your primary damage stat (sharp for dex, chaos/dark for int/faith, etc.) However, it's usually better to invest in split damage than pure damage, making a simple infusion a great idea for a physical class that uses a lot of weapon arts, as it gives a few seconds of free FP regeneration during a reposte.
  • All weapons have motion values assigned to each attack, which are modifiers to AR that are associated with the attack being used.
    • The Dagger has a motion value of 390 on backstab, 468 on riposte, and 78+455 on Hornet Ring riposte. The motion value of a backstab  with a dagger does not change with Hornet Ring.
    • This means that aside from a difference in AR, no infusion is strictly better for ripostes, as all infusions will get the same motion value, with the only difference being AR. Use whatever infusion will net the most damage for the best results.
    • Note that Dark damage does not benefit from Hornet Ring in PvP.
    • Motion values vary on a per weapon basis, however the Dagger does have the highest motion value of all weapons for backstabs and ripostes.
  •  Contrary to popular belief the dagger is not the shortest dagger, and it has a range of 22.4025xl on the 1h R1 and 25.6669xl on the 2h R1
  • The Weapon Skill Quickstep can be used to lessen the recovery frames of any attack.
  • When in the offhand, the moveset of the basic attack changes to a stab, however since it's slower than the standard moveset with short range it's worse than the standard moveset.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X". 
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped. 
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has: Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

        Hello DS3 player, I am come to you for a little favour, and I will carry this message to everywhere in DS3 community.
        There is a glitch that allows you to summon white sign mad phantom in Gael’s Arena (Credit to Dashingsaint), if you keep Shira alived while she invade you (you can escape her simply sprint out her aggro range), you won’t trigger gael boss cutscene, and then you could put down you purple summon white sign or summon other white purple.
        Thus, a new fight club is founded, an arena in a long lost dessert under the sunset sky which sprinkle with fainted galaxy.

              Literally the best build i've ever made was with this OP base weapon.
              chaos dagger +10 with 40/40/40/40 str/dex/int/fth, or sharp with max dex
              fire clutch (if chaos), leo ring (if sharp), red tearstone, maybe flynns ring if you use dragon form, then sacred oath, deep protection, dragon shout, and lothric war banner, and bloodlust (for self stabby), correct me if im wrong but i believe you can stack oath, protection, dragon, and lothric buffs together, but honestly its better to use morion blade with the double tearstone buff. abusing quickstep with the dagger then pressing light uses a thrust attack everytime which would buff with the leo ring, increasing its damage if you abuse it correctly, so basically a mega damage abuse build for pvp if you can dodge well

                      Need an easy mode for Sorcerers? I got just the recipe for you.

                      You start by picking up the Dagger. Infuse it with Crystal.

                      Then you obtain the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring and the Hidden Body Sorcery.

                      Boom! Now you can trivialize almost every non-boss encounter.

                      Supplement this strategy with the Lingering Dragoncrest Ring, Hornet Ring and Aldrich Sapphire for an even easier time.

                                i have a herald/supporter character that has about 50 FTH right now but base INT (8) and around 20 DEX and i play usually offline.
                                Should i go for lightining or chaos is always better?
                                I will probably infuse one with lightning anyways but i am asking for the one that goes to +10 (since slabs are limited)

                                  Kinda ridiculous how easy this makes PvE. All the bosses I used to struggle the most with can't even touch me. Friede, Demon Prince, Nameless King, Gundyr, Gael... Plus the high attack rate opens them up for a riposte in mere moments.

                                  Especially fun to pair with Farron GS in left for some really wild maneuverability options.

                                    when you get invaded in Dreg Heap and they pull out a dagger and endlessly spam quickstep and you just keep bonking away with your greataxe but no hits land because quickstep kinda broken ngl and when you start to actually win and outsmart them they take out a caestus and start spamming perseverance and theres nothing you can do so you die and they spam ´welcome!´ and you just get sad and remember that no matter how good you think you are at this game theres always that one person thats better than you and is smug about it, moral of the story is that the greataxe sucks and the dagger is a pretty powerful weapon.

                                      I got into an undead match with a player using this weapon and they killed me in one backstab. I blocked that player because he was not an expert player, he was an actual hacker. You can't use hacks online because FromSoft will ban you from being online for that stuff.

                                          Funny story that happened to me today.

                                          1.Start a new character as a sorcerer
                                          2.Buy dagger in firelink because it was cheap and i didn't have acces to rapiers and the like yet
                                          3.Leave my sign at first bonfire in Lothric
                                          4.Summoned by a random deprived, had fun, helped him deal with the Puss-of-Man etc.
                                          5.Host gets invaded
                                          6.OH****.PNG (knowing the place is a hotspot for twinks)
                                          7.Meet invader, points down, spams lightning urns, uses Onyx blade etc.
                                          8.Acts all edgy and spamy
                                          9.Get a backstab on the dude, corner him with host, spam him to death with his club and my dagger
                                          10.Right before dying he pulls the plug

                                          Moral of the story: if you cannot beat two starting characters with +0 weapons, don't twink and don't act all mean, you are only making a fool of yourself

                                            Can someone explain to me the math behind why the dagger is so powerful for backstabs?
                                            As I understand it, the critical modifier of 130 means that the AR is 130% for a backstab, vs. most weapons having 100 in that stat.
                                            But if you compare the AR of a sharp dagger at 40 dex to that of a sharp longsword at 40 dex for example, the longsword's AR is so much higher that even multiplying the daggers AR by 1.3 won't come close to it.

                                            I always thought "What's the point of a 130 crit modifier when the base damage is so low?" when I read the description... that is until I saw YT videos of people switching to dagger for crits of course. However I still don't understand the math behind it.

                                              This weapon is the ultimate killing tool for a devastating riposte.


                                              Chaos Dagger +10...

                                              With the stats high enough, it will wreck EVERYTHING. Add a Lloyd's swordring, will wreck even more. Add a Fire Clutch Ring, will wreck even more. Add a Red Tearstone instead, will wreck even more. On top of that a morion blade, will wreck even more. Now bowglitch-tumblebuff it with Carthus Flame Arc, will kill gods upon being even mentioned. To the Drakeblood knight at Archdragon Peak, I dealt over 4000 damage with a riposte this way, with all of these enhancers combined. It's crazy

                                              But you don't even need any enhancers really, the Chaos Dagger itself will wreck everything and everyone, already an AR of 300-400 is enough to oneshot everyone in PVP mostly.

                                              Truly a weapon to end galaxies with.

                                                    12/10/60 Strength, Dex and Faith and this dagger gets 260 pure physical AR when blessed infused. Makes it pretty good as a side arm for a faith user, and even better when used for ripostes and backstabs.

                                                                People testing this dagger for critical damage please note that testing in PvE on random enemies does not translate into viable results for PvP. They have different rules and thus yield different values. I'm not even going to pretend I understand half the things this site tries to explain in the manner that they attempt to explain it, but after a long time only playing PvE I learned this the hard way. If cannot get a friend online to help you with testing you can try to do this with in game NPC invaders. I'm not sure if this counts, but the drakeblood knight that drops the drakeblood greatsword at ADP is the only PvE enemy that seems to function the same as invaders. With the hornet ring on, you will get the 3 stage riposte for many weapons just like you do while playing PvP. The knight gets summoned endlessly as long as you don't kill the summoner, so you can try this out and see how it works. I have heard a rumor that they fixed the dark infusion in combination with the hornet ring. However, I have not had the opportunity to test this myself but would be interested in knowing if this is true. But considering that as of this comment, I have never seen any experienced DS player in PvP use any non chaos version of this weapon, I would assume it is only a rumor.

                                                                • +10 Chaos/Sharp Dagger Dmg: Here are my tests at the undead, firelink shrine: (doesn't need to test at different enemies, it doesn't matter. It's only to see how much dmg is between sharp and chaos/dark.) Amd I wanna tell: even at low int/faith stats - chaos will always be better as sharp, even with 99 dex and only 10 int/faith! My Stats: 66 strenght, 99 dex, 70 int/faith First without Hornet ring: Scharp: Backstab: 1360 (I didn't need to test the riposte or with Hornet ring, cause you can see the difference between sharp and chaos) Chaos: Backstab: 1800 (almost 500 more!) Riposte: 2192 Chaos, Hornet ring: Backstab: 2251 Riposte: 2754 So you see, sharp isn't even close. That's cause at backstabs and riposte: Your whole dmg counts. My +10 sharp dagger has 320 attack power and the chaos has 423. This counts. The overall attack power. And even if an enemy is strong against fire - your whole dmg counts (maybe a itzi bitzi less at enemies who are strong again fire but not much). So with the sharp dagger: you have with 99dex and 66 strenght 120+200= 320 attack power. Chaos Dagger with 70 int/faith: 82 + 86 phys dmg PLUS 86+168 = 423 attack power. So at critical attacks the enemies resistances doesn't count really. That means you get the phys dmg plus the fire dmg. Same is with dark. And this with the 130 crit attack Multiplikator, and the hidden crit Multiplikator - chaos/dark is just insane. Cause you get the whole dmg from phys AND fire TOGETHER! I hope this helps you a bit. :)

Enemies tested on: Dark Wraiths, Silver Knights, Lothric Knights VS Darkwraith(Farron Keep): - Sharp= 897,1050(Hornet Ring) - Chaos= 1030, 1278(Hornet Ring), 1387(Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring) - Dark= 890, 1096(Hornet Ring), 1177(Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring), 1209(Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring, Blindfold) VS Silver Knight(Anor Londo): - Sharp= 897, 997(Hornet Ring) - Chaos= 1022, 1268(Hornet Ring), 1377(Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring) - Dark= 1342, 1685(Hornet Ring), 1852 (Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring), 1922(Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring, Blindfold) VS Lothric Knight(Lothric Castle) - Sharp= 852, 997(Hornet Ring) - Chaos= 1028, 1279(Hornet Ring), 1394(Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring) - Dark= 1146, 1433(Hornet Ring), 1571(Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring), 1624(Hornet Ring, Clutch Ring, Blindfold) Sharp infusion fails in all 3 cases and seems to be useless. Elemental Damage seems to be really boosted during a riposte, taking advantage of enemies weaknesses. Chaos deals alot more damage against darkraiths even though they're resistant to both. Dark seems to be much better, especially on enemies with weakness to dark and since there is no fire damage equivalent for the Blindfold Mask i'd say that Dark is usually stronger than Chaos but it should always depend on the enemies resistance.

                                                                              I think i have an idea for what the highest crit damage possible without hacking the ar, Dark dagger+10,Max level,Sacred oath from a summon and a enemy,Lothric war banner, Rtsr, Morian's blade buff, Dragon torso stone roar, hornet ring, dark clutch ring,Pontiff right eye ring(Fully charged),Power within and force casting/tumblebuff with Darkmoon blade and parry and crit a dark phantom with the lowest absorption possible at around -200%+ . This is possibly the highest crit damage in the game, either that or Dark lothric greatsword and replacing the right eye ring with lightning clutch ring and all the other stuff.

Blessed gets an S scaling in faith, but everyone goes on about how good the chaos infusion is. Should I go blessed or chaos?                                                                                         I like this weapon for pure aesthetics. It has style and despite its reach, can make a decent pve weapon. Find your balance with this and you can get through some surprisingly hard battles. Never be afraid to go back to basics.

                                                                                          Having a fire or chaos infused dagger as one of your secondary weapons is a good idea for any build, whether PvP or PvE. PvP for ripostes obviously, but in PvE there are more than a few enemies who are extremely annoying but have huge weakness to fire damage. For those a dagger will do more damage than any other weapon you might be carrying around and also often triggers a flailing animation where you can escape or get a few more hits in. Examples: pus of man in high wall / consumed garden, ceiling blobs in cathedral / catacombs / anor londo, undead dogs in high wall / anor londo / untended graves / irithyll, worm guys in cathedral / irithyll dungeon, hollows all over the place, and on and on. The blobs are a classic example - hitting them with a 400AR physical weapon does like 30 damage per swing, but a fire dagger will hit for 100+ and you can swing it so fast they'll be dead in seconds.

                                                                                                      here is some testing i did with the dagger and it's various infusions on the drakeblood knight (all the testing was performed with the hornet ring and +10 dagger):

                                                                                                      backstab dmg - 695
                                                                                                      crit dmg after parry - 900

                                                                                                      here is another interesting fact that i'll already write here - many people must have noticed that the rapier has the same crit modifier as the dagger (130), so everyone assumes that the crit dmg of the rapier will be higher because the rapier's Ar is higher than the daggers but here is what i've got for 60 dex sharp rapier:

                                                                                                      backstab dmg - 582
                                                                                                      crit dmg after parry - 777

                                                                                                      now back to the dagger, as we seen already the the front critical dmg(after performing a parry) is around 1.3 stronger than the back one, so from now on ill write only the backstab critical dmg assuming you can calculate the front one by urselves(and because i kinda suck at parries)
