Orbeck of Vinheim is a NPC in Dark Souls 3.

Orbeck of Vinheim Information

Location

You can find Orbeck of Vinheim in Road of Sacrifices in the second floor of the near by ruins near the Crucifixion Woods bonfire. Go to the ruins that lead to the Crystal Sage boss, You will reach a room that has 4 doorways and an enemy with a spear and sheild. One leads to the boss, one leads to a cystal lizard, one leads to a room of enemies and the other leads to the second floor of the ruins and Orbeck.

He will relocate to Firelink Shrine after talking to him, but only if you have 10 Intelligence.

  • If you lack points in Intelligence you can use the Scholar Ring to boost it to 10. Once he's at Firelink he will no longer care about your intelligence level being too low.

Orbeck's Questline

Once Orbeck is at Firelink Shrine, if Yuria is also there she will ask you to "deal" with him and will reward you with the Morion Blade if you bring her his Ashes. Don't do this if you wish to continue giving him Scrolls to unlock new spells. Orbeck's ashes can be given to Yuria after he dies of natural causes, and she will still reward you with the weapon.

  1. Speak with him after buying more than three Sorceries, giving him one Scroll and being any Non-Sorcerer starting class he will thank you and give you the Young Dragon Ring. (after testing, it's just three spells, not more than three).
  2. After purchasing Farron FlashswordPestilent MercuryAural DecoyHidden Body and Spook he will ask you if you like gimmicks and will give you Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring, along with the Silent Ally gesture (testing shows you can get the gesture and ring with just Flashsword, Mercury, Decoy and Spook).
  3. He will disappear permanently from the game should you defeat Abyss Watchers or any 4 bosses after recruiting him without giving him a single scroll for study. Only one scroll is required to prevent him from leaving. If he disappears from the game, you will not be able to get his ashes, and won't be able to complete Yuria of Londor's optional quest. Both the Golden Scroll and Sage Scroll can be acquired in Farron Keep.
  4. Once all spells are purchased from him, he will acknowledge you as a friend and well-trained sorcerer. He will then leave Firelink Shrine, and once you beat an other boss, you will be able to summon him for the Lothric, Younger Prince boss fight, just outside the large gate leading to the boss fog. You will also need to have defeated the Curse-Rotted Greatwood to see his summon sign.
  5. After the defeating Lothric, Younger Prince, Orbecks's corpse will show up sitting at a table at the Grand Archives, on the upper floor where the four sorcery-using candlehead enemies are. From his corpse, his ashes can be looted.
    • If you do not purchase all his spells prior to this bossfight he will remain in the Firelink Shrine and will not die. However, in NG+ and beyond, if you talk to him after giving him all four scrolls and having learned all of his spells in a prior playthrough, his departure will be triggered. Note that learned scrolls may be sold, so if you want Orbeck to remain in the Shrine, you might want to sell a spell which is of little use to you (not tested if this will work, needs confirmation).
    • If you do not proceed directly to the next NG, his corpse can be found at said location even if you did not summon him for the boss fight.

Dialogue

First encounter

Well, this is unexpected. I don't often have visitors.
What do you want?
This is my study that you've happened upon.
If you haven't any business, I've reading to get back to."

(Nothing) "Yes, I see.
On your way, then.
This is my study, and I've plenty of reading to do."

(Talk) "Oh, enough of you, already.
Do you have business with me?"

(Ask to learn sorceries) "How intriguing.
Very well.
Indeed, I am a sorcerer. With plenty to share.
However...
What champion demands service without recompense?
Clearly you are not that sort of man/woman.
So, you will make me a promise.
That in exchange for my teaching, you will bring me knowledge.
In the form of scrolls detailing sorcery's secrets.
Well? Can you assure me of this?"

(Make no promise) "I can respect an honest man/woman.
But I've already put in more than my fair share of gratuitous service.
Be on your way, then.
Though you're welcome back if you change your mind."

(Talk) "Have you changed your mind?
If I am to teach you, you are to fetch me knowledge.
In the form of scrolls detailing the secrets of sorcery.
Can you make this promise?"

(Make a promise) "Very well.
You are no fool. I take it you understand the weight of a promise.
I am Orbeck of Vinheim.
Unkindled one, I shall teach you sorceries.
We will learn together, it shall be like our very own school."

[Ask to learn sorceries with insufficient intelligence]

You'd better not. Sorcery is not for everyone.
And should never be forced. You have your own methods.
Sorcery need not be one of them. Don't let it bother you.
Be on your way, then.
You're Unkindled. Shouldn't you get back to your duty?"

(Talk) "Oh, I thought you'd already given up.
Well, nothing has changed. You're not inclined for sorcery.
It is either a natural fit, or no fit at all.
Be on your way, then.
You're Unkindled. Souldn't you get back to your duty?"

(Talk after 10 int) "Well, well... There's something different bout you, isn't there?
Very well. (the rest is the same as if you had 10 int the first time you talked)

Upon arriving at Firelink Shrine

Oh, you're back, then.
Again, I'm Orbeck of Vinheim, here to teach you sorceries.Let us begin with the basics.
The ideal sorcerer bears the twin faces of the dragon...
...Oh you could at least act as if you are paying attention!"

Talk

I don't mean to seem overbearing, but have you forgotten?
In exchange for my sorceries, you are to bring me knowledge.
In the form of scrolls detailing the secrets of sorcery.
I hope you're not one to break a promise."

Greeting

Back again, I see.
Perfect timing, too. I'm in need of a diversion."

Leaving

Promise to stay safe."

When Crystal Sage has been defeated (not sure)

It is folly to claim lives recklessly, friend. Don not be tempted.
No matter the victim's stature, every killing has a consequence.
Even as I bloodied my hands, I never realised this simple truth.
Hmph. There I was, the very definition of a fool…"

When given Sage's scroll

Oh, my… This is stupendous.
Then the Undead Legion of Farron possesses sorceries quite unknown.
Thank you, for upholding your end of the bargain.
I doubt I ever would have made this discovery alone.
Now, let us unravel the thing, so you may put these new sorceries to use."

When given Golden scroll

Oh, my… This is stupendous.
It's from Oolacile, an ancient land of golden sorceries.
Not even the Dragon School possesses such a long-lost scroll.
What would the xanthous scholars say, with their ridiculous headwear.
They would simply slaver over this find."

When given Logan's scroll

Oh, my! You've made quite the discovery!
This is a scroll of the prodigious Big Hat Logan.
A masterful sorcerer, long missed in Vinheim.
And now, we have his scroll, right here in my very hands."

When given Crystal Scroll

Unfathomable.
This is a crystal sorcery, created by the pale dragon, thought only to exist in legend...
I am ever grateful to you. This is truly sublime.
I am afraid this is a debt I cannot repay, only...
I will be sure to unravel it for you. Just a moment."

Young Dragon Ring

Oh, I have something for you.
You're a fine sorcerer now, no mistake.
You should have something to prove it.
Go on. If I'm giving something away, you'd better well take it." (gift)

Silent Ally & Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring

How do you like gimmicks, friend?
This is a sign, a cipher employed by sorcerers who use quietude to their advantage. (gifts)
With this, you can be sure to tell friend from foe from your very first encounter.
It's a very old practice at this point...
...but one that you deserve to know."

Talk after ring and gesture

In Vinheim, I was an assassin.
A sorcerer only in name, a killer for hire.
What a fool I was, thinking one day I would learn real sorceries.
When I became Undead, I was exiled from the school.
But here I am, now, exploring the depths of sorcery.
All thanks to you, I might add.

After purchasing all scrolls

You are no ordinary man/woman (dependent on character's gender).
All of these sorceries, and you've mastered every one.
If this where the Dragon School, you'd be,...
..well, overtly despised, and banished from the place.
Well I suppose it's time I packed my bag.
I'd hate to see our agreement end sourly.
Better left tucked away as a pleasant memory."

Leaving after purchasing all scrolls

Promise to stay safe.
It's been nice running our own little school."

Upon attacking

What is this about?"

"Is that how it is?" (first encounter)

Upon aggroing

Seems it's too late. Then, there is only one thing left to do.
With regret, I will end this here and now!"

"Then we are thorugh and done.
Enjoy your long sleep!" (first encounter)

Upon killing you

Farewell. We had a nice little school going."

"Gods, this business never did agree with me..." (first encounter)

Upon death

But, why...
Is that all I'm worth?"

"Ive lost...my touch..." (first encounter)

Notes & Trivia

  • If you are unable to meet Orbeck's intelligence requirment to get him back to Firelink Shrine, you can play through the entire game and he will still remain in his study at the Road of Sacrifices. You can then use the Scholar Ring you find later in the game to artificially boost your intelligence and return him to the Shrine. Be sure to immedietly return and hand over any scrolls you have. It is unsure when he leaves after all bosses have already been defeated.
  • You don't have to summon him for the Twin Princes fight to get his ashes.
  • If his corpse doesn't appear at the Grand Archives, teleport back to Firelink Shrine and make sure that he left, then go back and his ashes should be there.
  • Orbeck confesses to being an assassin for Vinheim Dragon School. This lends credence to the theory that Griggs of Vineim from Dark Souls I is also an assassin as they wear the same black robes associated with sorceror assassins.

To the editors (sorry i don't know where else i can post this): I got his dialogue on "It is folly to claim lives recklessly, friend. Do not be tempted.... the very definition of fool" when I selected 'talk' to him just after he moved into firelink shrink, and I have not explored Farron Keep yet.

P/S: Kudos to the editors. This wiki is awesome!

      • 27 Dec 2016 15:51

You don't need to defeat another boss before summoning Orbeck for twin princes. Left him in Road of Sacrifices until getting to Lothric, then gave him all 4 scrolls, bought all spells, exhausted dialogue, and his sign is available on the right hand stairs facing the Archives.

        • 22 Dec 2016 21:14

Wow he disappears if ur not fast enough? Its like the game says ***** u if u dont play like it wants u to play. Ds2 didnt have that ***** and u can even kill them and bring them back at a price. What a total ***** up

          • 06 Dec 2016 15:15

For some reason I can not edit but, you can kill the Abyss Watchers before giving Orbeck any scrolls and Orbeck will not go anywhere. On accident, I killed the Abyss Watchers and lit the bonfire beforehand whilst having a scroll in my inventory. I immediately returned to find Orbeck still waiting there for me.
Clearly there are more variables at play.

            • 22 Oct 2016 21:14

What happens, if i kill him before buying all spells? Can I learn these spells from Yuria after giving her his ashes? And can I give her the new scrolls, if I kill Orbeck before bringing him all of them?

              • Silent Ally23 Sep 2016 16:10

So, the wiki says two different things about getting this gesture, here and on the gesture page. To clear this up: Do I have to buy all spells from him or just the ones listed on this page?

                • Summon Obreck22 Sep 2016 07:20

You have to buy all scroll to make him leave and avaiable to summon at lothric boss fight ! Give him all the scroll, buy every spell from him and then a new dialog will appear. "You are no ordinary man/woman..." After this you can summon him.

                  • Wiki is inaccurate about Orbeck's summon sign19 Sep 2016 15:30

The wiki is inaccurate about where Orbeck's summon sign is. It is NOT "just outside the large gate leading to the boss fog". It is on the right platform (when facing away from the boss gate) next to the top of the big stairs with the Lothric Knights.

                    • INT < 10 ? Wait until Grand Archives.15 Sep 2016 08:31

Since it is not made clear above I will say it here, because some players may feel that the only way of getting him is before Abyss Watchers.

If your character's Intelligence is less than 10 and you don't want to spend a point in Intelligence, you can wait until you get the Scholar Ring in the Grand Archives to recruit him. Just wear the ring and return to him outside the Crystal Sage bonfire. He will then agree to teach you sorceries and go to the Shrine as normal.

FYI: at this point of the game, you can give him all four Scrolls at once if you've acquired them already.

                      • Orbeck not leaving03 Sep 2016 15:49

Am I missing something, I got all the spells from him, and gave him all 3 scrolls and he doesn't want to leave. I just finished the Dancer and exhausted all of his dialogues and yet he doesn't want to leave

                        • Leaving even if not buying all spells23 Aug 2016 21:02

Got the Crystal Scroll, bought HCS and CSC, left to get more souls, when I got back to Firelink for CMW he wasn't there. Got the dialogue listed under "After purchasing all scrolls" but not the one about him leaving.

                          • Weird orbeck04 Aug 2016 20:07

I gave him all 4 scrolls and buy almost all his spells, and I went to farm some souls, and when I came back to firelink he wasnt there, what can I do to buy the other spells?

                            • Orbeck's Permanent Disappearance24 Jul 2016 02:46

I haven't given any scrolls to Orbeck when I defeated the Abyss Watchers but he did not leave permanently when I returned to Firelink Shrine. Might have been possibly due to me not activating the altar which moves and opens the way to the catacombs yet.

                              • Another Voice Line?22 Jul 2016 14:32

I went and killed Orbeck in one shot instead of aggroeing him first. His voice line was "So be it. It was nice while it lasted." It doesn't seem like this is listed along with the other quotes he has currently. This was in the end game as I was moving on to a new game, him having all the scrolls and having given me the Silent Ally and Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring.

                                • Orbeck dying?10 Jul 2016 19:50

This is probably obvious but I want to know it 100%.
If I fight the Princes and I summon Orbeck and we both die or at least he dies, will his summon sign be gone?

                                  • Bringing Vinheim Back04 Jul 2016 15:41

So after I had slain 7+ bosses I finally recruited him then gave a scroll to ensure he'd stay. However upon re arrival he was gone until I spoke with Yuria then he came back.

                                    • Where in Firelink?26 Jun 2016 11:31

                                      Where is he in firelink?
I sent him earlier went to firelink about 10 mintues after sending him there and I cannot find him!
I've spend 2 hours running around looking inside and out every nook and cranny every corner and he's simply not here. I talked to Anire and she said I had to kill him. So if shes seen him and heard him hes surely supposed to be here. But I can't find him

                                      • How can you sell back learned scrolls?25 Jun 2016 00:46

Correspond to the questline no.5 point 1 "Note that learned scrolls may be sold, so if you want Orbeck to remain in the shrine, you might want to sell a spell which is of little use to you", how to do that? There's no options to sell back the scrolls. Even if I sell back to the shrine handmaid, the stock still 0.

                                        • Snape, Snape, Severus Snape16 Jun 2016 20:04

This guys sounds like a definite reference to Snape. His dialogue and his looks...he's like a sligtly nicer but still very grumpy Snape. He even mentions Dragon School all the time.

Now we know what happened to Snape afterall.
