Miracle of Dorhys the deranged evangelist.
Summons great insect swarm to feast on foes.
Those who linger too long on the brink of the Deep will often slip. Dorhys is sure to have wallowed in this darkness, intoxicated by its peril.
Acquired From
- Found in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley: From the Church of Yorksha bonfire, head out of the main entrance and down the stairs. Take the path going right and then head straight on to an overlook platform that has or had a Crystal Lizard on. Hit the railing on the right to reveal steps going down. Follow the path until you see an item near a tree. Drop down and kill the screaming Evangelist to receive Dorhys' Gnawing.
Notes
- Deals (spell buff x 1.2) dark damage.
- Fires a pair of spinning swarm projectiles, instead of of the single swarm projectile fired by Gnaw. The hit inflicts both dark damage and bleed buildup.
- This spell is an upgrade of Gnaw.
- Applies 210 points of bleed buildup.
- This is the highest single hit application of bleed in the game, and is sufficient to bleed some enemies with a single cast. Extremely effective even at the minimum required Faith.
- This bleed buildup is a fixed value, and does not scale with Luck, Faith, or Intelligence.
- The dark damage scales with the spellbuff of the chosen catalyst. Dark Miracle catalysts (Sunless Talisman & Caitha's Chime) with high Intelligence and Faith will maximize the dark damage.
- The projectile has lazy homing, it tends to turn most accurately at medium distances. Near the end of the maximum range it shoots off in a straight line.
- The projectile's hitbox is wider than the particles show. It can be difficult for enemies or players to avoid it in narrow places.
- Sped up in regulation 1.08 and again in 1.11.
- Takes approximately 1.4 seconds to cast at max casting speed.

"And so, she lived in fear. Of the dark, of the things that gnawed at her flesh.
And yet! The Abyss hath yet to produce any such creature!"
According to the Locust Priests, insects like the ones conjured from this miracle don't originate from the Abyss. Which makes sense if you consider that the description of "Gnaw" says they "lurk in the Deep" instead. Meaning the clergy of Gwyn's church are so afraid of the Abyss that it has turned them into schizos whose imagination maninfests insects that petrify and torture them.
In a way, that's genuinely hilarious.

Utterly trivializes a bunch of PvE encounters. I killed Dancer by spamming this and fast-rolling away.
- Anonymous
I killed the screaming evangelist in Irithyll, and this spell didn't drop. Repeated kills do not work. Is this spell tied to learning the first Gnaw spell?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Could these insects be related to the locusts in the ringed city?
- Anonymous
Is it just me or does sage ring not speed up the cast? Its noticeable with lifehunt scythe but I just cant see anything different with this miracle…
- Anonymous
Enemys who die just by spamming this spell with 24 Faith and a Sunless Tali +4: Havel, Dancer, The Nameless King, Champion Gundyr, Demon Prince, Slaveknight Gael, Deep Accused.
Its basically beeing naked, spamming roll and KEKW-ing at all :D

Dear lightning spear users: your ranged damage is so lame that isn't even worth dodging. What? Point blank range? Yeah, good luck getting close to trade with a caster. I just need to do 2 steps back to avoid that point blank bs and swipe your guts with lifehunt scythe. Slash! There goes the hp you thought lost in my health bar.
Tears of denial? That's cute. Keep rolling away from my insects.

I think that Evangelist might've fallen to the Abyss, those screams sound an awful lot like the Bloatheads in DS1's Oolacile

Since bleed buildup scales with luck, would this make some kind of wacky faith/luck build viable, at least for PvE?
- Anonymous
A shame miracles and faith builds got the short end of the stick composed to other casters, imagine what could have been...

demon prince was living hell the first time through
then i played a miracle build and used this to bleed him a new urethra

This spell is great against most bosses, as well as powerful mobs (like Lothric Knights). Low cost, somewhat easy to spam, does a crapload of damage just from the bleed effect. The higher their base HP, the more damage they take from bleed. Usually takes 2 casts to bleed a boss.
Also, unlike most offensive spells, the majority of this damage comes from its bleed effect, you aren't (as) reliant on high spellboost/boost rings/etc.
At 9 int/45 faith, with Sunless Talisman+4 deals about 50 more damage/cast than a +9 Canvas Talisman.
HOWEVER, both the cast speed and projectile speed aren't great. So getting 2 casts off in short succession is difficult against enemies that are super-aggressive and/or resist dark/bleed. Sooo it's pretty much useless against Midir and Gael...

I don't know why 1st hit and every other hit will get damage less than next hit?

good against the dancer, bleed after 2 hits, just keep distance

If Chris bought a cat, it's Chris' cat, and Chris's cat. Yup, big girl ain't no Dorhy, she Dorhys (say Dorris, not Dory) the apostrophe after the "s" is a somewhat dated way of writing, but I'm sure entirely purposeful here. Plus Dorris just sounds so much better, more mean old lady than cute fishy!

Does this miracle still work decently with just high Faith but a low Int stat? I have a very high Faith stat (was 50 when I was sticking to sl120 for covenant stuff and it is now up to 60) along with 40 Dex. I have mostly been using Tears of Denial, Lightning/ Darkmoon Blade, Lightning Arrow, and Vow of Silence for mage bosses. I wondered if the bleed is the main draw or do you also need Int for the dark damage?

fromsoft dosen't care too much about attention to detail but atleast the thing that drops the spells ACTUALLY USES THE SPELL

Her name is Dorhys, as in Doris spelled weird. Get it right, ***** tards.

It's a solid spell for PvE, but it's very hard to land in PvP as the tracking is worse than your typical projectile spell. Ironic that Farron Darts seem to hunt you to the ends of the earth while summoning a nightmare host of blood-thirsty insects will float right past you as though there was a 13-course steak dinner behind you.

her name's Dorhys, so the apostrophe should be behind the s, but the title and url got that wrong

I always take the secret path to kill Dorhy. Not that I ever use this spell, spells just aren't my thing. I just want her to shut up.

A solid alternative to Boulder Heave for pyromancers going after the Demon Prince. 2-3 will tend to trigger bleed. Fear not the dark my friend, and let the feast begin.
- Anonymous
This is recommended to use against the Nameless king, He has Bleed resistance but if you don't use pyromancies or fire weapons as well as dark pyromancies and weapons, the dark damage will help Big time. A friend tested this out last night with a newer character he made. he had 14 int 25 fth and it did decent damage to the Nameless King. (note: he did not use it against the drake because the drake has a higher resistance and instead used lightning weapons and miracles to kill it.
- Anonymous
Would recommend this if your a faith build and need to kill the dancer.
- Anonymous
This appears to be just about the most cost effective offensive ranged miracle in the game even if the enemy isn't particularily prone to bleeding and even if you're using regular chimes. As an added bonus it also tracks a bit unlike lightning spears and such. Pretty sad for all the Gwyn's faithful who'd like to stick to lightning.

You can get it right at the beginning of irithyll by baiting Dorhys to the locked door with alluring skulls and toxic mist/dung pods

This vs Affinity on high int/faith build? Which one do you think is better? I'm being pulled towards this (mainly due to already having 40 faith on my character) but is Affinity better for PvE? (I'm not doing pvp, I usually go unembered, only using ember right outside the boss area to avoid invasions and wasting ember on me underestimating foes)

This miracle is one of the most underestimated spells in the game for the DLC bosses on low SL runs. Even at SL30 you can respec to have the 25 faith for this easily, and Sister Friede and the Demon Prince can both be hit with it from afar while the NPC phantoms distract them. On some bosses it procs immediately - Father Ariandel will take 900 damage per cast in NG, and with Sister Friede it will proc on the 2nd cast. Sister Friede is one of the only bosses that drives me crazy on low SL runs and whenever I've had enough of trying to melee her with my piddly +1/+3/whatever weapons I spec this spell in and get her on the first try.

How quickly could this spell tear the demon prince a new one, and what would be the optimal build to do so?

I constructed a specialist bleed dex/miracle build (disgusting, I know) focused on applying the bleeding proc, and it makes certain bosses complete pushovers. Blood Warden Twinblades + Dorhy's Gnawing repeatedly killed the NG +7 version of Lorian and Lothric in under a minute. I think Refined Warden Twinblades with Carthus Rogue are better, because in the same fight it seemed like they got the bleed proc to trigger more regularly and consistently than the blood gem, while also doing more regular damage.
Dorhy's Gnawing would proc the Dancer immediately most of the time, while Lorian and Lothric required two, sometimes three. The Demon trio were completely annihilated by Dorhy's Gnawing, with the proc occurring on single hits for insane damage. Roll, cast the spell, roll, cast the spell, dodge, etc. It makes that fight completely trivial.

Could this be viable in a bleed/hollow build? Making it a faith/bleed/hollow/luck build. Just thinking.
- Anonymous
As it turns out this thing is the ultimate cryptonite for the demon princes. I watched Prod's video and ended up underestimating this miracle for PvE.
Removed hitbox speculation, reworded and cleared up statements around non-scaling bleed buildup and dark damage scaling
- Anonymous
Shoots 2 insect swarms compared to Gnaw's 1 insect swarm making it larger and harder to dodge.
This is not correct. This spell's bullet has the same collision radius as Gnaw's. The 2 insect swarms are just a part of its visual effect.
Another interesting fact: the Evangelist version only does 170 bleed. This is likely the only place where a technique gets stronger in player's hands.

It says that you can increase dark damage, but is the bleed damage fixed or can that be increased with rings that boost miracles?
- Anonymous
Dorhys is short for "Dolores". What already means "suffering" in itself.
- Anonymous
This spell seems to really aggravate people in 3v3. I've had more point downs, potty pies thrown & post-match backstabs than ever. Love it!!
Patch 1.11 sped this spell up significantly, in addition to the extended movement period. Wonder why they don't always include all their changes in their patch notes.
Anyhow, this miracle should be a staple on your bar for PvE. It's good for more than just bosses too. Regular enemies that aren't even bleed weak will still take significant damage upon bleed producing. And it's FP cost is low enough to make it highly spammable.

Been helping other ppl who want to kill dancer early with my faith caster. If host brought carthus rouge and you spam this every seconds, she will be done in few minutes.
Regulation 1.30 App Version 1.11 - Thurs 23rd March - Extended the time you can move during the casting of the miracles of Gnaw, Dorhys’ Gnawing and Wrath of the Gods.

It makes you wonder why the Evangelist you get it from, presumably Dorhys, is exactly the same as any other Evangelist. The item says she 'wallowed in the brink of the deep', so I think she should be a little different from the other Evangelists. Maybe some different attacks or new voice lines or something.

This worked great against multiple bosses (pontiff sulyvahn, sulyvahns beasts, dancer of boreal valley), also makes NPC phantoms look like chumps. Crazy easy to beat Havel on archdragon peak with just roll spamming the spell. Also roll spammed soul of cinder, the bleed proc stuns him and gives time to heal if needed.
Do Morne's Ring and Ring of the Sun's First Born improve damage on this spell?
- Anonymous
Highly Underrated spell. Even against non-bleed weak enemies, it usually causes enough bleed build up to bleed them in one hit. This spell alone makes it easy to cheese through many bosses in the game. For example, it took me only two tries to beat nameless king in NG +5 using only this spell and two tries again for the Soul of Cinder.
However, I do wish from would grant it the homing that the evangelists get from casting the spell.
- Anonymous
Adds 210 points of bleed. The weaker version does 130 points.
- Anonymous
Does the bleed damage all stack together? For example if I dory's gnawing then attack with a bleed damage weapon could it finish off the already existing bleed damage causing it to make them bleed?
- Anonymous
With Caithias Chime+9 and 40Int 40Faith Soul of Cinder bleeds in 2-3 Hits taking about 2000 dmg plus the spell damage, which is about 500 per Hit!!!!Used this on my Pyromancy Build, because i felt like the Fire and Dark Spell werent so effective. Initially i wanted to use lightning miracles and tried thisjust for fun, but it turned out brutally effective.

I was having a bit of trouble dealing with the dual pontiff beasts near McDonnel on my cleric caster build, so I decided to use this thing without having caitha's or sunless, and it ripped them a new one... would probably also work well on those ***** hand grabby enemies in the profaned capital, although I didn't personally try that out.

" (at 55 Faith and 10 Int using Yorshka's Chime +10 I actually do 2 extra damage compared to Sunless Talisman +5.)"Stuff like this can go in the comments section, that's what it's there for. Also, yes a Caitha's Chime with no Intelligence will do less damage with dark spells than Yorshka's Chime at 55 Faith. Caitha's Chime is not meant for pure Faith builds, it needs high Int and high Fth together before it's stronger than Yorshka's with pure Faith.

Does anyone know if the bleed buildup of this spell, and Gnaw for that matter, scale with luck?

there seems to be two copies of this page. This one does NOT match the spelling in the game, which is "Dorhys' Gnawing" presumably a possessive form for someone named Dorhys.
- Anonymous
Does this also cause bleed like the other version of gnaw or is this one just raw damage?

Illusionary railing near the first bonfire in Ilthyll, after the garden area with the pyro and berserker mobs. Leads to a place you can drop down to the witch behind the gate earlier on.
- Anonymous
This is really only useful if youre melee only and you need an easy way to cheese some tough bosses with ranged bleed with low investment.
But if youre already a caster/pyro, this is not efficient. Takes about 4 hits to proc the bleed, and it costs 20 FP per cost, thats 80 FP just to get one bleed to proc the dmg, and the dmg it did to Dancer was 593. Thats 80 FP for 593 dmg.
Meanwhile, a Chaos Bed Vestiges at 30/30 INT/Faith with a +6 pyro glove deals about 700+ dmg for 35 FP. So yeah...
Only use this if youre melee and youre struggling.
