This is definetly Sif, due to the fact that its a very old wolf next to the Abyss Watchers who are said to bear the same fighting style and strength of Artorias, and may also worship Artorias. And the Gravestone behind the Wolf bears a great similarity to Artorias' grave in Dark Souls 1, in the arena you fight Sif in. The Wolf/Sif may be emaciated/dead due to your encounter in Dark Souls 1.

I really wish we learned more about this doggo. Maybe we could have even woken it up if you rank up far enough in the covenent.

I wonder if this wolf is actually Sif. I remember seeing a YouTube video that explained the Wolf might be Sif but I would think Sif would be long dead during this time.

          • The Abyss Watchers are rolling in their graves with all these casuls wearing their armor, spamming Legion Etiquette with the Dark Sword/Irrythil Straight Sword and attacking reds as a Watchdog of Farron.

            • Anonymous

The dead bodies near the Dragon Torso stone in the Irithyll Dungeon also bleed in exactly the same way when struck, so that doesn't prove the wolf is alive. It is just a graphical effect and is meaningless in this case. The wolf is obviously dead and the article should be changed. It also does NOT growl or breathe. The lighting from the fire simply makes it appear that it is moving when it is isn't.

It's dead unfortunately. Doesn't breathe, doesn't move. Looks mummified. Probably preserved as an object of worship. Everything else in this game breathes loud enough to hear around corners....if a giant wolf in ds3 doesn't breathe loudly while it sleeps or make respiratory movements, it's dead.

Praying to the wolf gives you the legion gesture, which is the pose the abyss watchers give you in the cutscene, proving that they prayed to it. Ik it might be stupid since the watchers are fighting it out in the boss room, but it would make sense to have a couple of dead watchers in the room, or even a mini boss watcher

Just like Forest Hunters in Dark Souls 1Just like Bell Keepers in Dark Souls 2Still just as annoying, even with broken auto summons in Dark Souls 3

What if the Old Wolf of Farron was the child of Sif from DKS1! Sif is also a female and the Abyss Watchers also follow in the steps of the Wolf BLOOD master which was Artorias. Artorias was the master of Sif but since Sif has been long dead and killed by the chosen undead then they had to be connected with the original Wolf's blood in a way so they must have partook in the blood of the child of the Great Gray Wolf.

If you remember Sif from DS1 its Artorias greatsword was too big to be actually the same Artorias wielded. Probably because Sif was designed first, Artorias with the DLC later. Result is sword and Sif were too big. But this DS3 Sif would match the Artorias sword if he holds it in his mouth.

                        • So the new patch notes say the patch will fix matchmaking for the Darkmoon and Blue Sentinels, but why not this covenant?!?! It takes ages to get invasions :(

What if the old wolf of farron was actually sif himself? And the reason he looks black and sick is because the abyss watchers used up most of his blood. his covenant is also created for the sole purpose of guarding the grounds of "sleeping warriors" just like sif did in dks1. he guarded artorias' grave from anyone that would dare to enter.

Like a wolf companion that levels up with you and has it's own personal armor/weapon slots and his name will be Maximus and he will be mine. Oh wait, this is dark souls and they would probably have the saddest storyline for the dog... ughh...

So hawkwood killed him for me do i have to wait for ng+ or if i kill hawkwood when he asks me to duel him will the wolf let me level up?

Could Hawkwood killing it have to do with telling the Shrine Maiden where you found the dreamchasers ashes? Maybe he listens and goes there

So where exactly is this ladder? The poison swaps are pretty big and I've already been through them once. I don't want to look in every corner again to find a ladder.

As long as you don't talk to Hawkwood after you have killed the watchers you can still use the covenant, just tried it.

No doubt a reference to the beloved wolf, Sif, so the trivia stating that it represents Sif is quite valid, but they aren't the same character. Sif is dead! Has been for centuries or millennia since we killed him/her back in Dark Souls 1. The 2 wolves obviously look different as well (size, fur color, texture, physique, etc). On the other hand you can argue about how it could be a decendent or a reincarnation of Sif, and that's fine, but do not get the two confused as the same character magically surviving all this time. That would break the games canon! The Sif boss fight was mandatory, not optional. There is no way to skip it with out glitching. This situation is just like how Siegward and Siegmeyer are different despite being so incredibly similar. Andre may or may not be the same, but his presence makes a bit more sense, as he wasn't killed (in the canon), and could survive via the undeath or unkindled curse. There is also the possibility that he is a demigod of sorts, based on unused files in the first game.

I think you can confirm that killing hawkwood keeps the old wolf alive. I did before beating the abyss watchers and he's still fine. I dunno, maybe he might die anyways after a while because i only beat the boss recently

                                          • Anonymous

It is not sif, she is dead, you have killed her in this series already, twice if you killed the royal rat authority in ds2, so this is likely just a similar wolf of the same subspecies as sif was, besides that, it seems to be around only two thirds to half the size sif was just on paw size comparisson alone, and if there is one thing Miyazaki enjoys putting in these games, it is attention to detail.

If you run up the stairs leading to the elevator then jump towards his shoulder you can stand on his back. Praise the master!
